Probably the most popular mystery novel in Japan, and of course it's by Seicho Matsumoto.
Two bodies were found in Fukuoka, a local detective suspects that it was not a suicide and he decides to follow up alone, while a detective in Tokyo is following a powerful businessman who is associated with the incident.
Using Japan's efficient train system and its timetables to tackle the impeccable alibi of the suspect, that he was in Hokkaido at the time of the incident, the other side of the country.
From Tokyo to Fukuoka to Hokkaido, the story follows the Japanese train system to look for a loophole that the suspect must have left behind.
The harder he tries to make the impeccable crime, the more possibility of making a mistake - the two detectives look for the small mistake, and because it's Seicho Matsumoto, it stays thrilling even if they go into details and you already know who's done it.
