Finally a book that actually matched my need.
As it says on the tin, it's a book to help autistic children start to speak.
The author is the director of an organisation in the US, so it's about their program, but it doesn't jump on that from the start, it talks about the importance of judging the timing to engage with the children.
(And your child can be a teen or more grown up)
When the child is open to you, you try a few techniques, if not you try to be a good companion.
I don't want to write down their techniques (you should read the book!) but that first step is the hardest as nothing much would work if the child is giving you the Red Light, but there is a way to switch it to the Green Light, with patience and enthusiasm.
There are a lot of step by step methods explained, and checklist to follow their progress, starting from how to get longer attention from them, how to get 5 words, and form sentences etc.
The author is British but worked in the US so there is a lot of American enthusiasm and lots of adjectives like awesome, sweet, wonderful.
But naturally, without that enthusiasm it's difficult to get any children's attention.
I'll use the methods and will use the checklist for sure.
