✔ A book that made Higashino a super star ✔ How far would one go to cover a murder one didn't commit ✔ Gorgeous blend of thrilling mystery, perfect crime, and imperfect human
★★★★★+❤ Genius vs Genius. A math genius plans a perfect crime, not for himself but for his neighbours, a mother and daughter. He is devoting his life to make this crime impeccable, challenging his friend and archenemy a physics genius Galileo. It's like a chess game, except, you cannot help but cry at the end.
🔽 Book review and notes 🔽
All of Galileo novels are good, clever and full of emotions, but this one, this is something else. In Japan this is the book that made Higashino the super star he is today and won numerous awards and of course it got incredibly popular, selling 3 million domestically, and 16 million worldwide.
Ishigami is a math genius, but making a modest living as a high school teacher, he is secretly in love with his neighbour, a single mother who lives with her daughter. One day, her violent ex-husband comes and to protect themselves she kills him - Ishigami is determined to plot a perfect crime to protect them.
Genius and devotion of Ishigami vs Gemius and challenges of Galileo. They are both selfless, and they respect each other, yet they have to do what they have to do. The thrill of the crime is naturally outstanding, clever and entertaining, it's a Galileo series after all, but it's the human side of the story that is gripping, so powerful yet so fragile.
This is the book I could recommend to absolutely anyone, it is packed with Higashino's passion and talent as a writer.
