Intense, tragic and honest, brutally honest.
Behind the storyline, there hides that otherness of being American in Europe, and notably all the characters are white, despite Baldwin's life long emphasis on the race.
But by making it exclusively about white Americans and Europeans, by excluding the matter of race, we focus on relationship on love, lust, guilt, desperation and the difference between the sensitivity of the Old continent and that of the New.
And it works. We focus on the man who is unwilling to make decisions though he is well aware of his guilt.
David, a young American man is in Paris waiting for his girlfriend to return to him from Spain where she's "figuring things out", but he meets Giovanni, an Italian bartender.
Myths of Americans in the post war Europe - so free, so happy, and always rich and they operate morals on another level compared to the war-torn Europeans.
Americans are the happy outsiders who can leave things behind, while Europeans suffer because they have to choose to stay, to stay being honest and to love, as they say, passionately, even if that is not the wise choice.
David remembers his painful past, he ruins the relationships, but the only choice he actually makes is to stay as an outsider of his own life.
It plays on the stereotype of homosexual men, on the only traditionally acceptable plot for gay men, which is, the kind that ends with tragedy.
Tragic, their romance was a tragedy but their bond was so strong and haunting that, once you're in Giovanni's room, you never leave Giovanni's room.
The place you can only exist by hurting and being hurt.
