If you don't know Tanizaki's other works, you will be shocked, if you do know his works, it'll make you love it more.
77 year old grandpa is now partly paralised and deeply and sexually in love with his free spirited daughter-in-law and more than anything he adores her feet.
It's written as his diary and it's full of his daily desires and fantasies.
He completely admires Sachiko, who is happily having an affair outside their house, and he bribes his way to kiss her feet.
He is mad, but it doesn't mean he's gone senile, he is totally cold and indifferent towards his own daughters, and he likes his grandchild, it's just that he's at this stage of his life where he couldn't care less, he just wants to admire her feet and would happily die for them.
Tanizaki was 75 years old himself when he wrote it, it is a masterpiece that deals with a unique theme of impotent old man's sexual desire and fetishism.
