古典って避けてしまう傾向にあるけど、実はエンターテイメント性が高いものが多いんですよね。
まあ、だからこそ何世紀も愛されるわけですが。

この本もそう。
ドロドロのメロドラマもあればロマンスもある。
強い女性像のイメージがあったのでロマンス要素に関しては想像以上だった。
一人の女性の惨めな子供時代を経て自らの手で這い上がる成長物語であり、フェミニズム満載であり、宗教の問題も、ちょっと怖めのゴシックでもあり、階級社会、人種、植民地主義などなど当時のイギリスにとっての社会的なテーマが盛り沢山。

そして当時の批判は目に浮かぶよう。
家父長制に服従しない女？男にノーという女？地位もなく地味な見た目のくせに？なんということでしょう。

もちろん今日の社会では見方は変わる(といってもいまだに女のくせにという意見は無きにしも非ず)。
彼女は男性にただ単に宝石やきれいな服を浴びるように与えられる人生は送りたくない。
自分も対等に貢献できると確信できる日まで彼女は愛する人をも拒否し続ける。

あと「屋根裏部屋の狂気の女」もとっても興味深い。
当時の差別主義が隠さずに描かれており、混血の人間、黒人であるこの女は理性がなく暴力的で、高貴な白人の文明から遠ざけなければいけない。
そしてジェーン本人はあまり怖がっても憎んでもいないというところも気になる。
この辺りは本が出ているそうなので、いつか。

なんて本なんだろう。
これは他にない読書体験、試験的読書体験。
読者、作者、翻訳者、出版社、翻訳者、政府も本の中の人物も全部ひっくるめて、時空も日常も現実もすべてを超越して地獄と天国がこの一冊に詰まっている。

主人公である「あなた」が本を読み始めるけれど、途中から印刷が乱れる乱丁本だったようで、仕方なく本屋に戻る。
新しい本もどうも違う本らしい、しかもこっちも乱丁本、そしてそれが何度も続き。
毎回、やっと背景や人物像を把握し面白くなってきたところで読めなくなる、なんとしてでも続きが読みたい、そこから「あなた」の異様な冒険が始まる。

余談だけど「夜は短し歩けよ乙女」って絶対これに影響受けてるよね。
読書という側面じゃなくて、どこにいっても結局ある女性にたどり着くという側面で。

これは一体何なのか。
どうやってこれらの物語は終わるのか、終わりとはなにか。
読書という地味な日常の体験。一人なはずの体験。
この本はそこにいろんな疑問をガンガンぶつけてくる。
そして答えは？
本を通じて時空を超えて繋がってくる人々、登場人物、作者、その他諸々と実際に読んでいる「あなた」、最後にはなんとなくニヤニヤしてきます。
なるほど、これこそが文学の魔術師、イタロ・カルヴィーノ。

What a book.
It is beyond whatever you expected, it's an experience, an experiment, it's both the paradise and the hell for a reader.

So the protagonist "you" start reading a book, but it abruptly ends because of an error, so you return to the shop for a new copy, but it's actually another book, which also abruptly ends, and this goes on.
Each time "you" want to continue the last book because it's so good but things go bonkers, and each time you want to share this experience with a girl, "Another Reader" you met at the start.
Is it just a vicious circle? A perfect read? 
When will it end, and what is an end, anyway?

It might put you off at the start because you get completely lost, and because the book stops exactly when you start to understand the setting of the book.
But hang in there.

What is a book.
What is a story, what is the role of an author, of a translator, and a reader, other readers, in this humble experience of reading a book? 
How are we connected, beyond everyday life and common sense, beyond time and space in this humble experience of reading a book?
It throws a lot of questions at you, but what this book gives you as its answer is the joy.
And in the end, you cannot help but smile.

インド生まれ、インド育ち、でもイギリス系白人の作家、ラスキン・ボンド氏。
2025年の今年91歳になったインドでも最も重要な作家の一人。
人種なんか関係ないというのは簡単だけど、運命はそう安易ではない。

さてこの本は恋愛に関するショートストーリーを集めたもので、彼は17歳の頃から書いているけれど、いろんな時期に書かれたものが集められていて興味深い。
ただ単に違う時代に書かれたから違う雰囲気、というわけではなく、彼の物語には繰り返し表される表現や風景がある。
主人公の名前が著者と同じラスキンやラスキーだったり、ロケーションも彼の故郷ヒマチャルプラデシュであることが多いので、彼の少年時代や思い出とは切っても切り離されないはず。
それだけじゃなく、同じセリフが出てきたり、同じ列車の路線に乗っていたり、違う女の子に同じ名前が繰り返されたり。

ストーリー自体はみなほろ苦いストーリーが多く、恋愛とはまだ言えない段階であったり、何かが始まる前に失恋したり、まるで夢だったかのように、彼が恋をした女の子はふっと消えていく。

日本ではあまり作品が出ていないのが残念ですがぜひ探してみてください。
でも彼の本は子どもにも読まれるように書いてあるので、英語でも比較的簡単な表現で書かれています。

Compilation of short stories, of love from one of the most important Indian writers, he turned 89. (now in 2025 he's 91)

They are written in different stages of the author's life, and his stories seem very personal.
Many of the main characters' names are Ruskin, or Rusky, and they are based in Himachal, so it's not difficult to imagine that they are based on his childhood or youth.
Most of them are bittersweet, like it's almost a love story but not quite. 
It ends before it begins, or it's so brief that it's almost a dream.

Some stories are in the train, maybe on the same line, or one of his beloved, Sushila, reappears in another story, many of his girls simply disappear - yes, just like a dream.

タゴールの素晴らしさはどこでも語られる。
でも実際に色々と読むまでは本当には実感できない。

もう一世紀以上経っているのでタゴールの作品集という名の本はたくさん出ているけれど、これはインド人の友人にもらったインドの出版社のもの。
詩や短編小説が多いので、インドでもその時代によってもかなりの本が出ていて、人と話していてその本は読んでないけどその物語は知っている、ということはよくある。

この本の中だけをみても、ジャンルがいろいろとある。
恋愛もの、幽霊の出る話や、家族、友情と、彼のその取り上げるストーリーの幅の広さに驚かされるけれど、そこで語られる物語の多くが、正直で真面目、謙虚で貧しい人々であるということも忘れてはいけない。

100年経っても、時代は変わっても、人々の苦しみの根源は変わらない。
だからベンガル地方、インド、アジアという枠を超えて、人はタゴールの物語に心を打たれる。

中でも良かった作品は「The river stairs」「The Cabuliwalla」「The son of Rashimani」「The master Mashai」「Living or Dead」「Fair neighbour」

リンクは、同じような短編、中編の作品集を張っています。
でも可能であれば他の手に取りやすい作品から入るのも良いと思います。

アジア初のノーベル賞受賞者、芸術と平和という観点から近代インドと近代日本を繋いだ人でもある、けれど日本では彼の作品はそうどこにでもあるというわけではないようです。

I have read about how great Tagore's works are, but until you read them, experience them, you don't really know, of course.

There are many of "selected works of" kind of books, this one is from Fingerprint in India.

These stories vary in the theme or genre, might be a love story, or a ghost story, or about family or friendship.
It shows how expansive his talent is, but more significantly his stories are about honest, humble, and poor people. 
That is why after more than 100 years they do not get old and continue to touch people all over Bengal, India, Asia and beyond. 

Some stories stand out more than others to me, like "The river stairs", "The Cabuliwalla", "The son of Rashimani", "The master Mashai" "Living or Dead", "Fair neighbour"

公募小説新人賞の作品とは知らなかった。しかも大賞じゃない。
なのに安定感があって面白い。

上から目線はここまでにして、何が面白いかって、ありえないよね、と分かっているのにストーリーが面白くてテンポが良くてあっという間に読んでしまうこと。
つまり面白いと現実味があるはイコールではない。

貧乏ポスドクの小ネタに始まり、笑わない美青年という設定、健気な美少女、暇な主婦にギリシャ神話と、エンターテイメント性たっぷり。
その上であらすじが「インドの古人骨と失踪した妹のDNAが一致」という壮大なことになってる。それが全然空回りしない。

まだ若いのできっとこれから熟していくんでしょう。
東野圭吾のように理系で人間味があってしかもどんどん書いてくれれば、楽しみが増えるわ。
誰でも惹き付けられるミステリー。

The author is in his mid-20s and it was only his debut novel.
It's so entertaining that all bibliophiles have read it in Japan.

The DNA of an ancient bones found in India matches the DNA of his missing sister.
And there are evil organisations and scientific secrets that are bigger than life; so you know it's impossible, there is no reality to it, but, but! you let that go because the story is so good.
Who cares if it's the story is unlikely, but not even SF, if it's entertaining, people will read and get addicted to it.

The protagonist is a beautiful lone young man who never smiles, his younger sister is a quiet pretty girl, there are also a bored housewife and poor students and Greek mythology, Frankenstein's monster, then the sound of mysterious liquid splashing - all the good ingredients are there.

We're all waiting for his future books now.
(And I'm sure it will soon be available in English)

ロンドンに初めて行ったときからずーっと話題の本、を20年経ってやっと読んだ。
なんとなく難しくて移民の厳しい生活の話と勘違いしていたけど、読んでみると心温まるコメディーっぽくてちょっとびっくり。
まさに当時まだ残っていたロンドンがこの本にはある、ごちゃごちゃした混沌としたロンドン。
ロンドンではイズリントン区というどちらかというとトルコ人エリアにほとんどずっと住んでいたのでこの本の人物と人種的には違うけど、当時は階級も人種も入り混じっていることが自然だった。
段々とロンドンは設備され、汚いものは「カーペットの下に隠されて」いまではお金がないと生活できない街になってしまった。

みんな違う意見を持ち、肌の色、年齢、世代、伝統、教育、宗教、過去、経験、すべてが違うなかで、ひとつの共同体として呼吸をするということ。
まとめることも同化することも必要ない、そういう共同体での生活は確かに苦労をするんだけど、その苦労こそがコミュニティの意義であり強みであるとこの本は語っているよう。

日本人を含む世界のイメージの中のロンドンは現実離れしてびっくりするけど、まあ実はロンドンはそういう幻想を売りにすることで観光業を盛り上げているので、この本で、20年前まであった本当のロンドンに出会ってください。
汚くて大げさで下品です。いや、でした。過去形。今はこういうコミュニティーは市内から弾かれているのが残念でならない。

The most talked about book ever since I arrived in London, for over 2 decades now.
And only now reading it.
Somehow I thought it be more, coarse or rough, but it was surprisingly heart warming and this really is the London I loved, the mess and how Londoners coped.

But I lived mostly in Islington, more clearly a Turkish area, but it is what you'd seen even in 2003 when I arrived, then slowly disappeared, or put under the carpet.

We all have different opinions, skin colour, age, roots, culture, education, faith, or lack of any or all of it, and it's ok you are not the same, or not in agreement, but we try to survive this thing called life as a community. 
The struggle to survive as a community, as a component of something big and messy, it's the fun, it's worth it.

ジブリの風立ちぬの基になったストーリー。
堀辰雄を始めて読んだけど、詩的でか弱くて美しい。
自身が病弱なのもあり、軽井沢という人間臭い生活感もない異次元が舞台で、そこで流れる静かな時間のなかで登場人物は静かに人を愛する。

サナトリウムという、そのなかでもさらに生活感から離れた空間を何度も登場させる。
風立ちぬ、Il vent se lève, il faut tenter di vivre- 風が立つ。ぼくらは生きようとしなければいけない。
そういうタイトルでありながら、主人公の愛する人はもう死の間際にいる。それをしんと見つめるかのように季節は流れ、木々にはつぼみが溢れ、落ち葉は深くなる。
そして二人は、もう死を待つのみの透き通った空間のなかで互いを静かに愛し、時空を越えた二人だけの泡のなかに生き、そして彼女のその静かな死後も彼はその泡のなかで生きる。
ゆっくりとひんやりと流れる時間に浸れる一冊。

今年はたくさん積読していたペンギンクラシックの短いのを読み漁り。

青年の苦の詩集。
どっかで見たけど、これはできれば酔っぱらった状態で夜に読むべき詩集だそうで、地中海の青い空のしたで読んでも場違いな感じ。

自己破滅型の男である恋人との旅行から帰ってきて書いたもので、挫折と自己憐憫と欲求不満たっぷり。
まだ20歳そこそこ、なのにその昔の華やかな幸せを思い、美しくて苦悩に満ちている。

ダークでリアルでパンクな若者の日々。
韓国系アメリカ人の魅力的な女の子、その子に惹かれる普通の男の子。
男の子が見つめる中、女の子はどんどん北朝鮮がテーマの白人の男の子がリーダーのカルト(つまり実態もメッセージも脆い)にハマり行動もエスカレートしていく、という流れ。

なんかちょっとパンクな感じで、カルトやテロリズムに繋がっていくんだけど、現代文学ゆえ表面的な雰囲気のまま。
文章の表現がまるで詩のようで新鮮さはあるんだけど、深さがないのが残念ではある。

複雑な心境にあるはずの女の子にもナレーターである男の子にも感情移入ができない。
そこを狙っているのかもしれないんだけど、そのせいで私の好みからは外れてしまう。

The dark and raw story about youth and there’s a bit of punk that leads to cult and terrorism, but everything seems to light and superficial, thus, contemporary.

It’s new in style, a bit like reading a poem and it’s refreshing.
But it lacked depth, you can’t go deep into the characters, neither the girl or the boy, so it doesn’t make you feel lost in the story.
But maybe that’s the point, and I didn’t get it.

誰もが聞いたことのある古典。というのを読むことにしたのがこの時期。
想像よりももっと大変なお話だった。
青年の悲しみや苦しみはそうなんだけど、それよりも彼の自己憐憫、悲劇のヒロインぶりがすごい。

大人になって恋だの愛だのを経験して読むんじゃなくて、現在進行形で全身で恋愛をしている若い人が読んだら感動が違うだろうし、さらに18世紀に読んだらもっと違うんだろう。
タイトルにちゃんと、「若き」ヴェルテルとなってるのがみそ。
ここは多くの若き人々が通る道。

青年は恋に落ちた。相手の女性の友情を自分への愛情だと勘違いし、苦しみ、そしてその苦しんでる自分にも酔ってしまう。
自分自身への酔いこそが絶望の源となり、自分では制御できないモンスターになる。
その悲劇の恋愛の原型のような、これ以降に書かれる報われない恋の物語の原型のような、250年たっても未だに共感する純粋な青年の苦悩。

This is the original version of all the sad love stories that came about since.
You’re in love, you misunderstand the affection, you suffer, you’re in love with your suffering and it is far stronger than yourself and you can’t take it any more.
A universal feeling of despair we all feel at some point in life.

画家の頑固おばあちゃんとバーのママの脇役がいい。この二人は人生のもっと先輩だから。

登場人物の若くはなく、もうすぐ40の女性が新しい人生を歩もうとするのはいいんだけど、でもぼちぼちよい一冊。

この時代というのは、とにかく破滅的。
それでも生きていけたんだから。

でもどうもこういうのは苦手ではある。
最近こういう、60年代の俺の青春時代、っぽいのをなぜかよく読んでる。
でも、一人の女性をとことん愛したストーリーとしてしっかり軸もあるし、そして実はその裏にある母親との葛藤というのも絡み合って複雑にしている。
私の趣味と違うけれど面白くないわけではない。
私がこの著者の作品を知らないことも、この本から私を遠ざけているのかも。

昔はこういう生き方が出来たし、それがかっこ良くて、まあ若者に活気があった、ということ。
いまはそんな生き方じゃ生き延びられない。

人気の小説というのは知っていたけど、実は読んだことない作者だし、第一、日本の現代文学は自分の好みではないと決めつけている私がいて。
それじゃいけないと読む幅を広げるという意味で手にした本。
自分の固定観念に挑戦した結果、この本が読めた。でかした、自分。

社会という暗い大きな闇が突きつけてくる物差し。
いい子は誉められます、きちんと親のいうことを聞いて、嘘をつかずに、でしゃばらずに。
それが今のこの日本社会で子供のときから受ける教育。
一昔前はそうだったんだから、あなたもそうしなさいという上の世代からの教育。

私自身はさっさと国外に出たので自分の境遇とは違う、だけど、だからといってこれを読んで心が痛まないわけはない。

恋愛小説でありながら、突如いなくなる婚約者、真実(まみ)のあとを追うミステリー風でもある。つまり読みごたえがある。
ちょっとずつ彼女の過去や思考の霧が晴れていく中で、これはいま結婚を「するべき年齢」といわれる日本の若者誰もが痛く感じさせられる現実であると思い知らされる。
家族ぐるみのお見合いではない、自分が定めた数ある基準から相手の点数を見定める婚活。
そこで見定められるものは本当は何なのか。

ヨーロッパでは親からの結婚の期待はあるのはあるけど、私の自由です放っておいて、と突き放すもしくは宥めることの方が多い。
それは、日本のようながんじがらめのレールを敷く社会を思春期で体感しないから。
間違っていようが自分の意見をいうことが奨励される社会で育つとそこまで多くの人は彼女に自分を投影しない。
そして他のアジアの国の多くは未だに家族が決めるお見合いも多い。よくも悪くも結婚とは家庭とはそういうものという考え方もある。
つまり日本はそのどちらからも外れた、自分の意見も主張できず家族の提供する安心感も浅い中でプレッシャーと疲労感だけが高まる孤独な活動となる。

でも、それでも、ネタバレ阻止で詳しくは言えないけど、彼女は確実にいわゆる大人の階段を上る。
遅いか早いかは、周りから見れば遅いかもしれない。しかし遅すぎることはない。

まだ間に合う、まだ失敗しても大丈夫、人生はいつだって方向転換ができる、まだここが終わりじゃない。よかった。

I had never read books by her, but glad I did.

Japan has a very strict "standard".
Be a good boy, a good girl, listen to your parents, don't like, don't stand out.
This is how you get educated since you are little - "when I was young this is how it was, so you should do the same"

It seems to be a modern love story, at least at the beginning, then his fiancée disappears completely. 
Slowly we learn about her way of thinking and her past, and I'd dare say any Japanese young people "at the marriageable age" will understand both sides, that THIS is the reality they are forced to live in.

Until our parents' age, it was not unusual to have arranged marriage in Japan, but today they have to go on their "konkatsu" a marriage hunting (rather than a job hunting), using websites, seminars, or apps without help from family or community - what exactly are we looking for in someone you wish to marry?

It might be difficult for people who grew up in the West to completely understand, because they did not receive the similar education when they were 14, or 8 or 5 years old.
Or it might be difficult for people from other Asian countries where arranged marriage might be still normal, because you have a backup from both families.
In Japan, it doesn't belong to either. You cannot stand up for your opinions, or you cannot reply on the safety your family provides. 
Konkatsu is a lonely battle.

I can't say much without revealing the plot, but just one thing, no you don't need to give up.
