イタリア語のタイトル、La ragazza del Kyushuに惹かれて。

九州からの少女(ragazza) 、桐子は兄の無罪を弁護してもらおうと東京の日本有数の弁護士を頼るが、お金がないことを理由に断られる、という、ひとつの歯車のズレからストーリーがどんどんと展開していく。

さすが松本清張、桐子の執着というテーマに直接関係ないことはさらっとしてて、執着というより静かな狂気とも言える彼女の振る舞い言動は、ミステリアスに沸々と描く。

余計なことをしなけりゃいいのに男のプライドのせいでどんどん深くはまっていく。

悪人は社会的な罰を与えられ、したたかな人間は生き延びる、清張の作品の人間たち、ここにも。

宗教関係、宗教にまつわる積読をまとめて読む読書月間を勝手に開催した。

当時70歳のカトリックの著者遠藤周作による、登場人物たちがインドへ向かう一冊。
偶然一緒の仏跡訪問ツアーになった数人の日本人それぞれが後悔や喪失の中の淡い期待を胸にインド、ガンジス川へ。
ベナレス(バラナシ、ヴァラナシ)は聖地でありガンジスに向かうことは死に向かうこと。
彼らがそれぞれの過去を胸に、生と死が共存するベナレスで想うこととは。

神という大きな力の信じ、ことごとく生活を否定されても、信念強く生きる青年の背負うものとは。
色々なストーリーが、母なるガンジスに向かい、生と死を含むその母性が全ての人を隔たりなく抱き抱える。
遠藤周作らしい、壮大であり静粛な一冊。

70歳という年齢を迎え、きっと本人も死を意識しながら生きていく上で、彼の永遠のテーマである「日本人でありキリスト教信者であること」をもう一度振り返ってみたんだと思う。
そしてその答えは、インドの深い河であった。

よく女性を理解し、特に感情を内に制限された、一昔前のご婦人の心の動きを細かく描く。

親との幸福な子供時代の家庭のあとの、夫との幸福であるべきだった家庭。
外に出たい、未知の世界に触れたい、でも妻であり母である女性にとってそれは抑え続けるべき欲望。
そして母と娘の微妙な関係。
彼女の頭の中でぐるぐると渦巻いている、さすがのストーリーテリング。

タイトルだけでは想像があまりできないものだったけど、なるほどやっぱり想像と違う感じ。
単純に言うと、東洋医学の先生による体の説明。
人間の体型や体癖をカテゴリーに分けて、それぞれにあった体操(ストレッチ?)を紹介したり、こういう風邪の時はこういう暖めかたをするとよい、と言う感じのかなり実践的な紹介の本。
試すことはないと思う、でも根本的な話である「自分の体は自分で管理する」と言う点ではかなり合点。

ブッカー賞もノーベル賞も受賞した、インド系トリニダード出身のイギリス人の著者。

ピンとこない人はこの意味が分かりづらいでしょうが、いわゆるクーリー貿易のあの流れで西インド諸島に渡ったインド人の孫。
彼らはインド人の顔をしていてもインドを知らず、故郷トリニダードでは常に黒人から人種差別を受けるグループ。
その孫の代で多くがイギリスに渡っていますが、故郷の観念が複雑なのです。

さて、本題の本について。
きっと、先祖の地インドにわたり、ダークネスの中にも神秘的な繋がりを見出す旅行記だと勝手に思っていたら、完全なる大間違いだった。

どちらかというと彼自身が自分で内面的な旅をする中で、ただその背景にインドがあるというか。
そして彼の描くインドは完全にネガティブ。
きっと本人も精神的に参っていた時期なのだろうけど、とにかく残酷な表現。
よく西洋人や裕福な人間がインドに行って貧困が美しい、神秘的だ、人生観が変わる、なんて言うけどそんな綺麗事は一切なし。
彼の旅行記は、貧困の様子、貧しい人からの搾取、貧困の醜さ、無知の醜さ、人間から出てくる廃棄物をことごとく描く。
インドでは発禁されていたそうだけど、それはそうだろう、こんな本が出回ったら旅行客は一気に減ってしまう。

いよいよ祖父の故郷の村にいくシーンも読んでいて辛い。
彼は義務感から行ったけれど、その貧しさ、人々の無知さに嫌気が差し、逃げるようにさっさと出ていく。
この場面だけでもわかるように、とにかく不快な思いばかりだったようで、隠しもせずにここに表現されている。

貧困は神秘的で美しいなんていう偽善者の顔をひっぱたくような、もっというとそんな偽善者に中指を立てるような、そんな強烈な一冊。

I thought it would be a travel journey from Naipaul, a winner of Bookers and Nobel Prize, where he saw poverty in India, spiritual and mystic and all that.
Well, I was completely wrong. 

It is more like a connection or a journey through himself, in the atmosphere of India.
Not heard to imagine he was in some kind of depressed state, but his reactions are raw and cruel.
He's not here to pretend that there's beauty in the poverty, as many Western travellers claim. 
Instead, he talks of the exploitation of the poverty, the filth of the poverty, of the blindness, or ignorance, of the endless corruption and of the excrement of all the negative things human.
Not surprised it was banned in India, it puts off the Western people who want to see the mystic India.

He had a pretty unpleasant visit to the village where his grandfather is from, that he's happy to dismiss, this story alone represent the sentiment.
It's not the UK where he lives, not Trinidad where he's from, India is to him familiar yet very unfamiliar. 
It's definitely not a happy read, it's a slap in your hypocritical face that wishes to say the poverty is beauty, no it's a middle finger to anyone who says that. Brutally honest.

やっぱり鋭くて、エンターテイメント性がちゃんとあって、なにより納得のいくミステリーなんです、松本清張はすべて。

この場合は、官僚の汚職。
とことん汚れていて、一般人からするとどうしようもない。
彼の作品は時代に密着したストーリーでいて人間の貪欲という普遍的な汚さがテーマで、あるけれど、これもそう。悪いやつら世にはばかる。

映画は辛くなりそうで見れないけど、原作をと思い。

やっぱり辛い。貧しいなんてレベルじゃなく餓えて病んで死んでいく。
それはこの短編集のテーマというか底にあるもので、家族なんて綺麗事もなく、少年時代、少女時代という綺麗であるはずの青春もない。
というか青春の前の12、3歳の時点でどう自分がその日を生き延びるかが大事である戦時中。

火垂るの墓の場合は、生き抜けなかったのだけど、他の短編集の人物は生き抜いてその後に待つ矛盾した社会との葛藤に悩む。
アメリカ人への生々しいコンプレックス、きょうだいで自分のみが生き残った罪悪感や傷、そして作者自身が戦後に犯罪を犯していくことで生き延びたこともあり、そういった少年の心情の描写はリアルで心に突き刺さる。

消えていく罪悪感、空腹、淡々と語られる文章からダイレクトに伝わるおぞましい情景と死の匂い、他人に頼らないと生きれないまだ子供であるコンプレックス、あまりにも身近な、なんというか、生々しい死。

一番想像していなかったのは、性に関する描写、アメリカひじきでは買春も本番ショーも出てくるけど、それ以上に全身やけどの包帯の下で始まる生理や卵巣を取るということなど妊娠や育児の女性の心理など、女性特有のいわゆる男性が扱いにくい話題も出てくる。

The Ghibli film is too well known, but I still cannot watch it and even less now that I have kids of my own.

Poverty, but extreme poverty where the war took everything and there's no other way than eventually die.
There are no beautiful things like family or childhood, it's about how to survive that day, and if possible saving the little sister also.

The book also contains other short stories, about kids who did survive - but it doesn't mean they are not struggling.
A vivid complex about the victorious Americans, or the guilt they carry because you are the only survivor among the siblings, or their will to do anything to live in the post war period.

Guilt disappears, but your hunger doesn't. 
What would you do to survive the day, or what can you do if you are only a child?

The most unexpected thing about the book is the description of sex and female body. America Hijiki talks about sex shows, yes that's an obvious one, but in one of the stories it talks about menstruation that starts even if your whole body is burned and wrapped, or they talk about removing ovary, or about pregnancy and raising children in general during the war.
All the things that's absolutely normal, especially if you are a woman, but never talked about in the history, which is more often written by men.

谷崎潤一郎が描く、とある老人の家にやってくる女中さんの記録。
といっても、谷崎の筆にかかれば全ての女が独特で愛らしくて、それを一歩下がってみている主人の様子など、まさに谷崎文学。

戦前からの数十年つまり一昔前の女中は現代でいうお手伝いさんではない。
若い彼女たちは田舎から出てきて住み込みで働くが、主人の方も自分の娘のように案じ、世話もする。そういう関係はやっぱり今ではそうはいかない。

主人の若い女好きが転じて女中だらけの家にいるのは一目瞭然で、いつものように足フェチなのも伺えるし、女中の自由な恋愛にだって、女中同士の同性愛へだって比較的おおらかに描かれる。
でもそれも今は昔、良いことか悪いことかデモクラシーとはそういうもので。

In the house with an old man, many maids come and go.
Back then, maids were not just housekeepers, the young girls come out from countryside, and their employers treat them like nieces, taking care of their affairs.

And remember it's Tanizaki, it means all the women in the book are unique, loveable and a bit crazy.
The house is always noisy with the maids chatting away and running around, exactly as the old man likes.
Yes he likes the girls and looking at their feet, but he also lets go of their little madness, or their love affairs, even love affairs among the girls.
It's an old custom or value that's disappeared.

It might not be one of his more famous books, but it's fun, it's sensual, it's subtly sensational, definitely a lovely read.

寒いところからというタイトルからして冷たくて、スタイリッシュでスタイル化されていて、クレバーで、ちゃんと人間の苦悩みたいのもある。

And I admit I have almost zero interest in this genre it didn’t draw me into it as much as it should or could but it was a good story that you van easily imagine it being made into films.

4つの短編。
松本清張らしい、男と女のもつれ、金銭のもつれ、男のプライド、そういう大好きな要素がちゃんと入った佳作集と言った感じ。

ここでもとにかく、旅行と言う、普段と違う空間と言うのがキーとなる。
もしくは戦争と言う異空間も。
あとがきにあってなるほどと思ったのは、松本清張は常にその時の新しいことを用いると言うこと。
ヨットと言うお金持ちの新しい趣味、離島への国内線の飛行機など。
当時はきっともっとブームになり、社会現象になったんだろうけど、いまだってレトロ感を残しつつも面白さもまだそのまま。
とにかく、外れがない。

Classic Seicho Matsumono, tangled up men and women, money, man's pride, all the good stuff in these 4 short stories.

He always brings in some new phenomenon that's happening in Japan to his stories. True. Like a posh trip to a remote island, so 60s.
His stories takes you to "somewhere not here", like the trip, or a day out on a yacht. 
It might not as "fancy" as it was in the 1960s, but you can still feel that excitement.
His books never miss.
