噂には聞いていたけど、やっぱり圧倒的に面白かった。

大英帝国が治めるインド、そこで行われるケシの栽培、そしてアヘン戦争の匂いを受けて奴隷船に乗り込む人々。
それだけでもう本を開く前から自分好みなのは一目瞭然。

開けてみると、個性的な登場人物がどんどん出てくる。
辛い結婚生活から逃げた主人公の女性ディーティ、フランス人ポーレットとインド人ジョドゥの兄妹愛、破綻した繊細なラジャに、秘密を持ったアメリカ人船乗りザッカリー、などなどがそれぞれの思いを胸にモーリシャス諸島へ向かう奴隷船アイビス号に乗り込む。
その流れだけで分かるよう、壮大なストーリーがこの3部作で描かれるのです。

女性たちの無謀さと、それについて行ってる男性たちだったり、騙されて人生が一転するラジャの変化などがエンターテインメントを込めて書かれているのでこの後どうなるのか。
まだ最初の一冊を読んだばかり、先が気になる。

日本ではまだ翻訳されてないので残念。
英語はちょっと難しいです、というかインド英語やそれぞれの訛りなどもあり分かりにくい。

できるだけ飾らずミステリアスにならないように書かれたブッダの伝記。

なんといっても2500年前なので順序よく語るのが難しいはずだけど、ブッダの人生を忠実に追い、当時のインドの様子もきちんと描写されている。(といってもこれまた大昔なので現実ではありえないことになる場合もある)

経典ではなく個人としてのブッダの人生を知る入門書であり、そしてなぜあの時代のインドで仏教がスタートしたか、なぜ現代においても多くの人を魅了するのかということ、ということがよく分かる一冊。
ただ読むのは難しかった。だって今もだけどこの時代のインドの人の名前はとても長くてしかも色んな人が出てきて誰が誰かわからなくなる。
なので英語自体はちょっと上級者向き。

★★★★★+❤ この本がなぜ今重要なのか。白人が人種差別主義者とレッテルを張られることは、黒人が人種差別を受ける事よりも酷いことという考えがまかり通る今の社会。実際に人種差別がなくならない理由はなにか。「何が」問題なのか。

とてもパワフルな一冊。　
まずはカバーがいい。彼女の怒りや苛立ちを思う存分に表現してる。
そして中身、今の英国にとってとても重要な内容。
英国の歴史の中での黒人やアジア人がどうか変わってきたのかという観点から始まり、英国にシステムがいかに差別的か、またその差別が正当化されているか。
(正確には黒い人と茶色の人という言い方でいわゆる東洋人、黄色人種ではない)
何が人種差別を生むのか。そこで人々が抱える恐怖とは。
フェミニズムと人種、階級と人種、と続く。

この本が、なぜ今、重要なのかは英国に住んでいれば分かる。
つまりここ5年ほどで、人種差別は正当化されているから。(当時2020年)
白人が人種差別主義者とレッテルを張られることは、黒人が人種差別を受ける事よりも酷いことという考えがまかり通る社会。
そして今まで、英国に特化した人種差別を問う本や議論の場というのは数えるほどしかなく、ほとんどはアメリカから輸入されたものであったという事実。
つまりそれだけタブーであるということ。

フェミニストでもある著者は、フェミニズムの土俵で、人種のことに触れると突き放されるという。
別の場所でやってくれ、と。
まるでフェミニズムは比較的裕福な白人女性のためだけの場であるかのように。
多くのメインストリームの場で女性の権利は支持されるのに、人種差別に反対することは、理論的なレベルで支持されても、日常レベルでは見て見ぬふりをされる。
しかも「これは人種差別じゃないから」と開き直って。

そして、何年も議論が絶えないEU離脱を後押しする白人労働者階級の人たちは、まるで移民や白人以外の人が国を去れば(英国生まれの有色人種やミックス人種を含め) 全ての問題が解決すると信じている。つまりそこでも肌の色が問題だとされる。

実際に人種差別がなくならない理由はなにか。
「何が」問題なのか。
黒人やアジア人に問題があるのではない。
それは明らかに白人主義に問題がある、もちろん。
どうやって白人のセンチメンタリズムを傷つけずに、白人を優位な立場から引きずり降ろさずに議論するか。
怖い黒人女性と決めつけられずに意見を主張する方法があるのか。
そういった葛藤の中で、彼女は、もう白人に人種の話はしない、と宣言したわけです。
もちろんこれは、さらに数年前のブログのタイトルで、そこから彼女はやっぱり言わなければいけない、ということでこの本を書いているわけですが
沈黙は自分を守ってくれない。黙っていても自分の立場は良くならない。

挑発的なこの本は、まさに多くのセンチメンタルな白人を追い詰めて、彼らを罪悪感に浸らせてしまった。
どうしていいかわからないと頼ってくる白人たち。
イベントのQ&Aでモノローグを始め勝手に泣き崩れる白人。
でも彼女は言う。
罪悪感を感じる余裕があれば、自分の行動範囲内で声に出してみればいい。
例えば職場で発言してみる。
組織的な差別の基盤はやっぱり人。
一人ひとりが行動をし、一つのムーブメントとなる。

日本にいればたしかにこの感覚は分かりづらい。
大々的な奴隷貿易の歴史もないし、移民が我々の職を奪いに国境を超えて来ているという妄想的な危機感もないし、肌の色と社会的立場もしくは階級の明らかなカテゴリーもない。

それでもこれはやっぱり重要な本である。
英国人歌手のStormzyが言ったように、英国には例えばイタリアのようなあからさまな人種差別はないかもしれない。
でも確実に存在していて、差別主義者は今まで陰口を言っていただけだけど、今日の英国で大声で言える権利を得たと勘違いしている。
そしてそれはとっても恐ろしいことだ、と。

この本が、いま、この若い英国人黒人女性によって書かれベストセラーになっていることは、その挑戦的な内容を例え読者全員が100%完全に支持できないとしても、とても重要なことであり、間違いなく英国各地で議論のきっかけになった。
ちょっと希望が持てる気もしてくる。

ロンドンって住むにはどんなところ？と聞かれたら、とりあえずこれを読んでと言う。
完全にお金持ちの遊び場と化したロンドンが近年抱えている問題はここに詰まっている。

人々はより良い生活を求めてロンドンに行くけれど、すぐにそんなものは存在しないと気づかされる。
ここ数年で特に急激にお金がないとマシな生活はできない街となった。
未だに階級の問題は根強く残っているし、桁違いの金持ちの生き方は一般人からは見えないほどにきっぱりと区別されている。
(もちろん旅行者に見えることは絶対にない)
金、権力、悪意の中で生きる人々が皆抱えている思い、それは寂しさ。

仲間と敵、それは政治上あったり利益であったり郊外に住むギャングであったり。

主人公の美術史の歴史家兼教授である生徒との関係がメインだけど、貴族階級の伝統的な富裕層、ロシアの富裕層、その子どもたち、犯罪も厭わない若者ギャングなどの視点からも描かれていてまるでロンドンの街の生活そのままの複雑なサスペンス。

このエリアは実は私は合計10年近く住んでいたので、知ってる道の名前が出てきて嬉しい。
この辺は貧しい通りと裕福な通りが本当に隣り合わせ。

英語レベルで言うとロンドンのスラングなども入ってくるのでちょっと難しめ。
しかもみっちり657ページ。

初めて読んだタゴールの本はこの小説。
インドでは有名でテレビや映画になっていて、特に最近のアイシュワリヤー・ラーイ主演のは見てみたい。

Chokher Bali、眼の中の砂、やっかい者。
美しい未亡人が、知り合いの家に預けられ、その家の嫁と仲良くなる。
お互いをBaliと呼びあう仲だったけれど、才色兼備の未亡人(美しさが頂点のアイシュワリヤー・ラーイが演じる)は運命に反してでも自由になりたかった、そしてどんな手を使ってでも。

日本人には馴染のある夫婦間、母と息子、嫁と姑、という繊細な家族の揺れ。
そこに突如、悲しみを身にまとった美貌の未亡人がやってくるんだから、それぞれが沸々と狂っていく。
眼の中の砂は触るものすべてを乱して、いつの間にかいなくなる。
この身分をわきまえずに愛情も幸せも追求した悪に根元(インドでは未亡人は不吉な存在)。

不幸をテーマにした強く悲しいインドの傑作。

1920年代のインド、医者と結婚したばかりで主婦として静かな生活を送るはずの主人公が南インドのベンガルール(バンガロール)の街で起こる犯罪を推理する、という可愛い感じの推理小説。
シリーズ物の第一弾。
主人公Kaveriが好奇心旺盛で強くて、そうなのインドの都会の女の子ってこんな感じっていう楽しさと、権力を持つイギリス人との衝突もあったり。
若い奥さん、主婦であっても、白い目で見られても趣味の水泳はやめないし、好きに外を歩き回る。

著者が実は生態学者という変わった経歴なのも面白いので続編も読んでみる。

ベンガルールの街のスポットが色々出てきて旅行予習になったし美味しそうな料理も出てくる。
インド好きな人が軽く楽しく読める。

英語も比較的簡単なので英語の勉強にも。

まさに探していたトピックの本。
ダージリンのお茶と産業と労働者の関係。

ダージリンは世界で一番高級な茶であり、世界中で知られていてステータスもある、なのになぜダージリンの労働者は貧しいのか。
ダージリンのお茶一杯の値段はお茶を摘む仕事の女性の一日の給料より圧倒的に高い。
高級感を売り物にするダージリンの現実は静かに隠されている。

ダージリンやシッキム州のいわゆる広い意味でダージリン茶を作るエリアは実は最近まではインドではなかったし、18世紀に英国人が周辺の発達のためにネパールから大量の労働者を連れてきたので、人種的にもほとんどがインド人ではない。
90年代に盛んだったグルカ運動はいまも消えたわけではないけれど、これだけ商品価値のある商品を作るダージリン、インドは、西ベンガル州は何があっても手放さない。
グルカもネパール系の人々は何代もの間この産業を支えているのに実質的に何も所有できない、他の道も少ない、自分たちの歴史さえ曖昧になっている。
フェアトレードの観点から言うと、フェアトレードを押し付けられるせいで現地の人間の生活はより厳しくなったとも。

高級茶の代名詞のダージリンは現地の人々からの搾取によって支えられている。

最初は普通の旅行記にもとれる。
30歳のライターでベルリンに自由気ままに文句をたれながら暮らしていたけれど、あるきっかけからキリスト教の巡礼の地カミーノ・デ・サンティアゴでスペインへ、そして四国のお遍路四国八十八ヶ所霊場、最後はユダヤ教の巡礼でウクライナのウマンへと次々と巡礼の地を回る。
そしてこの旅の本当の目的は、自分の父親との関係を修復することだと気づく、といった感じ。

世界中を回って結局自分の求めていたものはいつも出発地点にあったという典型的な旅ではあるけれど、やっぱりきつくて苦しい思いをすることでそこにたどり着くのです。
ユダヤ教の指導者ラビであった父親が、ある日若い男の恋人を作って家を出た。
その父親を許せるのか、許すのか、自分は父親を愛しているのか、父親は自分を愛してくれていたのか。

そういう彼自身の葛藤を別にしても巡礼を回る旅行記としても面白い。
宗教心もスピリチュアルな思いも全くなし、でも現代人はそういう人が多い。
それでも巡礼をする意味はやっぱりある。
サンティアゴは友人と(友人や恋人と巡礼する人たちは多くが分かれるらしいけど彼はなんとか友情を保ちつつ)、四国は一人きりで、そしてウクライナは弟と父親と。

ユダヤ人らしいユーモアもちらほら見えて読み物として面白い。
ただ足の裏がぼろぼろになり寒くて辛くて心も折れるこの旅行記を読んで自分も巡礼に行こう、とは思わないかも。

多くの人にとってダージリンのお茶の風味はユニークな優雅さだったり高級感を象徴するけれど、ダージリンの抱える問題は別のユニークさがある。
世界有数の高級な飲み物でありながら、つくり手の問題や生活環境は厳しく、いまだに植民地的な搾取によって生産されている。
お茶を摘む作業を担う人間の一日の給料は、一杯のダージリンの値段以下。

同じく世界有数の飲み物であるシャンパーニュやウィスキー、抹茶などと違い現地の国民、インド人は口にしないダージリンティー。
数え切れない問題を抱えるダージリン茶産業、今後も人々はダージリンを飲み続けるのか、そして作り続けることはできるのか。

トランプがナンシー・ペロシ史をnasty と呼びいつものように低俗なあだ名で呼んでいたのにかけて、歴史上の100人のやり手な女性を集めた本。

著者ごとく、彼女たちについて深く読んでいく前に私達は彼女たちが間違いなく存在したという事実をきちんと受け止めるべきだと。
歴史のホコリにまみれて人の目のつかない場所に追いやられた女性たち。
男性と同じ様に成果を残しても、女性は常に男性より以下。男性の偉業ほど大事ではない。
もし仮に、女性が何かを成し遂げたとしてもそれはただの偶然で、女性は英雄ではなく男社会にとってただnastyなだけ、邪悪なだけ。

カテゴリー別に分かれていてそれぞれは短くて読みやすく、ジョークや口の悪い文章が連なるけれど、やりすぎずちょうどいい。
ここからそれぞれの女性について読みすすめるガイドブック的な本。

ダージリンのあたりの歴史などの本はよく読むけれど、これは個人的な回想録なので違った面白さがある。
外部の人間として、その複雑なダージリンの問題、政治、生き様をしっかりと見つめる一冊。

日本語版しかないけど、この辺りに興味がある人はぜひ。

自主出版だと思うけれど、大英帝国とインドの側で歴史を紡いてきたネパールに関する独自の見解で興味深い。

いままでの大英帝国とグルカ、ネパールの関係や歴史を語る本は間違えている、というところから出発しているので、この本のミッションとしてはそれを正すことのよう。
なので大英帝国とグルカの関係自体について学ぶ本ではないのが私の希望から外れていた。
ただ、英国とインドという巨大な渦のせいでネパールの存在が軽視されてきたという点には納得。
なので、私はまずはオーソドックスにネパールの歴史を学ぶべきです。

日本で言うところのおばあちゃんの知恵袋みたいなものだけど、実用的というより逸話や伝説から学ぼう的な感じ。
Avvaiyarという南インド、タミルの12世紀の女性の詩人の言葉を、女性がずっと繋げてきた逸話、格言集。

一気に読むというより、たまに一つ一つ読んだり、思い出したときに開けて読むようなもの。
古代インドの賢さと暖かさ。

Another book gift when I was in India. 
It tells little stories associated with wise words passed down from Avvaiyar (a female poet from Tamil, southern India, from 12th century), female to female.

It's not something to read like a story, something to open time to time to enjoy the nice little stories, 
It's a collection of little famous or historical, or legendary quick stories, so not really something to read all in one go, but something to go back to time to time.
Wisdom and warmth of the ancient India.

インド生まれ、インド育ち、でもイギリス系白人の作家、ラスキン・ボンド氏。
2025年の今年91歳になったインドでも最も重要な作家の一人。
人種なんか関係ないというのは簡単だけど、運命はそう安易ではない。

さてこの本は恋愛に関するショートストーリーを集めたもので、彼は17歳の頃から書いているけれど、いろんな時期に書かれたものが集められていて興味深い。
ただ単に違う時代に書かれたから違う雰囲気、というわけではなく、彼の物語には繰り返し表される表現や風景がある。
主人公の名前が著者と同じラスキンやラスキーだったり、ロケーションも彼の故郷ヒマチャルプラデシュであることが多いので、彼の少年時代や思い出とは切っても切り離されないはず。
それだけじゃなく、同じセリフが出てきたり、同じ列車の路線に乗っていたり、違う女の子に同じ名前が繰り返されたり。

ストーリー自体はみなほろ苦いストーリーが多く、恋愛とはまだ言えない段階であったり、何かが始まる前に失恋したり、まるで夢だったかのように、彼が恋をした女の子はふっと消えていく。

日本ではあまり作品が出ていないのが残念ですがぜひ探してみてください。
でも彼の本は子どもにも読まれるように書いてあるので、英語でも比較的簡単な表現で書かれています。

Compilation of short stories, of love from one of the most important Indian writers, he turned 89. (now in 2025 he's 91)

They are written in different stages of the author's life, and his stories seem very personal.
Many of the main characters' names are Ruskin, or Rusky, and they are based in Himachal, so it's not difficult to imagine that they are based on his childhood or youth.
Most of them are bittersweet, like it's almost a love story but not quite. 
It ends before it begins, or it's so brief that it's almost a dream.

Some stories are in the train, maybe on the same line, or one of his beloved, Sushila, reappears in another story, many of his girls simply disappear - yes, just like a dream.

タゴールの素晴らしさはどこでも語られる。
でも実際に色々と読むまでは本当には実感できない。

もう一世紀以上経っているのでタゴールの作品集という名の本はたくさん出ているけれど、これはインド人の友人にもらったインドの出版社のもの。
詩や短編小説が多いので、インドでもその時代によってもかなりの本が出ていて、人と話していてその本は読んでないけどその物語は知っている、ということはよくある。

この本の中だけをみても、ジャンルがいろいろとある。
恋愛もの、幽霊の出る話や、家族、友情と、彼のその取り上げるストーリーの幅の広さに驚かされるけれど、そこで語られる物語の多くが、正直で真面目、謙虚で貧しい人々であるということも忘れてはいけない。

100年経っても、時代は変わっても、人々の苦しみの根源は変わらない。
だからベンガル地方、インド、アジアという枠を超えて、人はタゴールの物語に心を打たれる。

中でも良かった作品は「The river stairs」「The Cabuliwalla」「The son of Rashimani」「The master Mashai」「Living or Dead」「Fair neighbour」

リンクは、同じような短編、中編の作品集を張っています。
でも可能であれば他の手に取りやすい作品から入るのも良いと思います。

アジア初のノーベル賞受賞者、芸術と平和という観点から近代インドと近代日本を繋いだ人でもある、けれど日本では彼の作品はそうどこにでもあるというわけではないようです。

I have read about how great Tagore's works are, but until you read them, experience them, you don't really know, of course.

There are many of "selected works of" kind of books, this one is from Fingerprint in India.

These stories vary in the theme or genre, might be a love story, or a ghost story, or about family or friendship.
It shows how expansive his talent is, but more significantly his stories are about honest, humble, and poor people. 
That is why after more than 100 years they do not get old and continue to touch people all over Bengal, India, Asia and beyond. 

Some stories stand out more than others to me, like "The river stairs", "The Cabuliwalla", "The son of Rashimani", "The master Mashai" "Living or Dead", "Fair neighbour"

著者はイギリスでいちばん有名な料理、レストラン評論家。
少なくとも一番口が悪いことではかなりダントツで有名。
彼はずっとObserverという新聞にレストランの批評を載せていて、この本はその中でも悪い評価のレストランの記事を集めたもの。面白くないわけがない。

辛口と言われているけれど、この本に集められた記事を見る限りではレストランが悪いとしか言いようがない。
料理がまずい、レストラン自体が悪い、さらにどちらも悪いとなると救いようがないし、その上でぼったくりとなると悪いけど全国版で叩かれても仕方がない。

1999年から2012年の間の批評なので、確かに一番悪い時期ではあったのかもしれない。
イギリスは別としてロンドンの料理は不味くないよ、と言われだして、レストラン業界がカッコだけつけた料理をどんどん出していた時期。
さらには物価もどんどん上がり、シンプルでそこそこ美味しい料理を出せていたレストランは撤退していった。

私がロンドンが好きな理由は料理にしろ文化一般的にも、ごちゃまぜ感があったから。
超高級なものもあるし、びっくりするほど安いものもある。
誰も知らない立地でひっそりと美味しい料理を出していた店もあった。
でも今は高級料理のテーマパークと化したロンドン。
いつかこの無駄な高級志向時代が終わることを願って。

He's probably the most well known food critic in the UK, and definitely known for being brutally honest.
These are some of the reviews he's put on the Observer, but of bad restaurants; you know it's going to be a good one.

So yes he's known to be merciless, but after reading these reviews in this way, it just makes think, yes London is full of bad restaurants.
Not just bad food, but also bad at doing restaurants.
I don't know which is worse, bad food or bad restaurant, usually both come together though.

The reviews are from between 1999 and 2012, probably the worst period, too. 
But has London got better? 
Is it really worth all the money you'd have to spend? 
And to give posh restaurants some space, kicking out the more simple and honest restaurants out of town?

I love London for the mix of food, but seriously, it shouldn't have become a fast food theme park of expensive food.
I hope this phase ends some time soon.

シッキム王国がインドに吸収される前の数十年を詳しく書いたシッキムの歴史の本でありながらも、その最後のチョギャル(王様)であるトンドゥプ・ナムゲルのストーリー。

シッキム、現インド シッキム州はネパール、ブータン、チベットなどに囲まれたヒマラヤ山脈の東に位置するエリア。
地形的に厳しいエリアでありながらも重要な国々に囲まれた特殊な地理もあり、17世紀からはチベット系の王チョギャルが治めていて、1975年にインドに吸収される。

知れば知るほど面白くて仕方がないのです。
この本のスコットランド人著者は、幼い頃に祖父が語ってくれたシッキムに憧れ、ついにその地を訪れる。
ペリンの町の外れにあるペマヤンツェ寺院で、ちょっと変わったに僧に出会い、お前はシッキムの何を知っているんだ、と言われ、ある本を渡された。
そこから彼の本格的な研究が始まる。
その僧こそ、当時国王の側近であった人物であり、その本が最近私もやっと読めた本Smash and Grabなんですね。

ヒマラヤの文化が集中しているシッキム、元は現地民が住んでいたけれど、チベット系の王ができたことで文化的に仏教中心になっていって、でも19世紀ごろからは大英帝国も入り込んできて、農業改革を行うに当たり、歴史的にも敵対していたネパール人をシッキムに移住させる。
チベットや中国が権利を主張するもイギリスの保護国となったシッキム、インド独立後はその権利を引き継いだインドの保護下になるも、最後のチョギャル、トンドゥプ・ナムゲルの方針はシッキム独立であったため、ネパール系に多かった親インド派と国内で対立が続き、親インド派を手懐けたインドの後押しで王政は崩壊、あっというまにインド軍に囲まれ、アメリカに亡命。
と、簡単な歴史はこんな感じで、この本は最後のチョギャルに焦点を置いたものでありながら、前後の流れもわかりやすい。
インド、中国、イギリスと巨大な権力がこの小さな王国の上で渦巻いている。
自分の王としての権利にしがみつき、若いアメリカ人の王妃(東洋のグレース・ケリー)に操られているんだ、出来損ないの政治家だ、と色んな意見はあるけれど、結局のところシッキム王国に何ができたか。

インドとなった現在もインドからシッキム州に行くには検問を通ります。
私は2023年に行ったけど、外国人は要ビザ。
シッキム州でシッキム人以外が不動産を買ったりビジネスを始めるのはかなり困難。
面白いのは、18世紀から圧倒的にネパール系が多いのに、観光地も含め主要な寺院はチベット仏教系。
自然が豊かなので次回行くときはぜひもっと北部に、それこそこの著者が訪れたペリンに。

The history of the last few decades of the kingdom before it was annexed by India and the story of their last Chogyal, their last king, Thondup Namgyal.

The more I read the more I'm interested in Sikkim, and this is definitely the most thorough book to learn about Sikkim.
The author on the other hand, is Scottish who loved listening to his grandfather telling him about his journey to Sikkim when he was young.
In 2009 he finally managed to get to Sikkim, and in a Buddhist temple near Pelling, he met a strange monk who gave him a book to read.
The book was called Smash and Grab (my review here), the monk was Yongda who used to be the chogyal's Captain, and this is how his work has begun.
Andrew Duff knew he had a story to tell. And I'm glad he did.

From the 17th century Sikkim had been governed by a Tibetan king, Chyogal.
It has borders with Tibet (with China behind), Bhutan, Nepal then India, so it's fortunately or unfortunately located in a strategically important place, as such, of course all the great powers were all over this tiny kingdom.
During the British era, British called in Nepali to cultivate the land to boost economy, even though Nepal had been an enemy of Sikkim for centuries.
The mass immigration meant that the ruling race, Tibetan, became the minority.
Now, Britain has left India, and increasingly the last chogyal was vocally against Indian influence to maintain his kingdom independent.
Sikkim was split in half, those who supported the chogyal and those who didn't, which was not an unobvious choice for the majority of Sikkimese who were Nepali origin.
Was he only clinging to his personal power? His illusion? Was he unnecessarily influenced by his young American wife (Grace Kelly of the East)? Did he do his politics well? Did he had a choice?
It's a fascinating book that goes deep inside the life of the last chogyal.

All the essence of the Himalaya is here, between the big powers, India and China, and of course the British Empire, what could a tiny kingdom do? 
But it's also his very personal struggles of keeping him kingdom, of his young American wife.
Many say he played his cards wrong, but actually, he had no chance of winning anyway against India.
Sikkim remains to be a unique little bits of India.

比較文学って掴みどころのない学問だったけど、ちょっとわかった。
つまり私のやった映画学と同じ感じだ。

勉強する分野は気の遠くなるほど広い。歴史、言語、技術、コロニアリズム、ショー者リズム、フェミニズム、コンシューマリズム、西洋、東洋、思い浮かぶものすべてを駆使。
いろんな「イズム」が生まれる度にまたそれを拾う。

あと、比較文学が分かりづらかったもう一つの原因は私がアングロサクソン系の国に生まれなかったから、にも関わらずアングロサクソン系の社会で高校から教育を受けたので、比較することはあまりにも普通で、わざわざ強調することがピンとこなかったからだ。
そうじゃなくても日本は常に文化の違う中国や欧米を比べることが当たり前なのもある。
それは、似たような文化の西欧が一番と思って暮らす人々とは感覚として違う。

そういう掴みどころのない学問のことを、簡潔に説明してくれる一冊。

人間は、比べる生き物。
何かを知ると、他の何かと比べてしまう、非常にシンプルな思考。
で、それで？
今からの比較文学に求められているものは、比較することで何が生まれ、何を得るのか。
そして、どこまで比較の対象となるのか。
ちょっと昔はインターネットの時代と言われ、今はもうAIの時代。
比較文化、映画学、また同じような一般教養、リベラルアーツの未来はどうなっていくんだろう。

Comparative Literature has always been something very mystical for me.
I’ve never studied Literature, but as I read this, I kind of got the idea, it’s like Film Studies that I did.
It’s so vast, you have to know the history, the languages/techniques, then theories such as colonialism, socialism, feminism, consumerism, West, East, you name it.
As the society invents more “isms” we have more criteria landed on our desk to compare the work using that. Endless.

Also, I see now a reason of not getting the fuss, it is because I’m from non Anglo-Saxon or Eurocentric culture, yet I had education in Anglo-Saxon societies since high school.
Japan has its own culture in Literature and beyond (very typically, noh or kabuki).
If you are interested in Literature as a Japanese, by default you are somewhat into Comparative Literature, you KNOW there’s much more out there, there’s China, the Europe, unlike West Europeans where they only focused on their little corner of the planet.

アカバドーラとは、末期患者やその親族の苦しみに終止符を打つ女性のこと、そう、その町で暗黙の了解の中、患者に安楽死をもたらす役目を背負った女性。

とてもサルデーニャ的でとても地中海文化的。
土埃の立つ乾いた家の壁、バールに座っている男たち、一日中家事に追われる女たち。
草原に緑はなく茶色に乾いた草がいつこの地を炎に包もうかと小さな火花を待つ。

生を与える助産婦が女性なら、生を終わらせるのも女性。
少女マリアを引き取ってくれた独り身の女性は時折真夜中に黒尽くめの服を着て静かに家を出る。そして翌朝何もなかったかのように帰って来る。

善か悪か、天使か悪魔か死神か、それはもう問題ではない。
いま行われるべきか否か。

サルデーニャでは実際に存在していたと考えられている。
窒息という方法か、もっと有名なのは槌を使用する方法。
現在も安楽死の問題は解決しないし、間違いなく客観的に100%正しいという答えは出てこないかもしれない。

伝統に縛られた厳格な小さな町で、その大きく揺れる心境を圧倒的な力強さと威厳を持って描く一冊。
日本語もいつか出るといいですね。

The famous Accabadora, the woman who ends it.

It’s very Sardinian, very Mediterranean.
You can almost see with your eyes closed of the dry town with stones, men at the bar and women hurrying to go back home to cook, and the dry field that is brown, ready to ignite a fire from any tiny sparkles.

Maria was adopted by this woman who lives alone since she was small.
Time to time, she dresses completely in black and leave their house in the night – and comes back in the morning and continues the day.
It’s not about right or wrong, or justice or injustice, if she was an angel or devil or death – it’s about if it should be done or not.

In Sardinia it’s understood to be true, that such women did exist.
Even today the problem of euthanasia is not easily talked about and we probably won’t ever find an answer that’s absolute.
This is a book that shows the town’s unsettling state of mind with such a powerful dignity.

現代アジアを造り上げた分離独立、パーティション。
その背景は日本人だけでなく、当事者のインド周辺の現地の人にも、英国人にも世界中でも知られていない。
バングラデシュ、ミャンマー、カシミヤ、そういうニュースで見る地域の問題は、自然発生したものではなく、もちろん現地の人が単純に暴力的だからでもない。
何事にも理由がある。

日本での第二次世界大戦の終戦日のぴったり2年後、インド帝国が英国から独立。
それは有名だけれど、そのインド帝国、つまり現在のイエメンからミャンマーまでの壮大なエリアがその前後にどう分けられていったかはあまり知られていない。
というか、イエメンからミャンマーまで、その間に現在のカタール、アラブ首長国連邦、ブータン、など無数の藩王国があったのすら知られていない。
5つの分離、つまりミャンマーの独立、アラビア半島の独立、インド・パキスタン分離独立、印パによる500ほどの藩王国の吸収、バングラデッシュの独立。

「知られていない」と繰り返し書いているけれど本当にそうなのだから仕方がない。
英国はインド帝国の利益によって支えられていたけれど、大英帝国の人口は当時の世界の人口の25%！
戦争により経済が崩れ世界の4分の1の人口を支えきれなくなった英国はできるだけ早く撤退することをモットーに、アジアなんて行ったこともないロンドンの役人が駆り出されどんどん地図上に線を引いていき、しかもインド帝国に借りていたお金もほぼ無視で、しかも「せっかくなら日本を敗戦させた8月15日に独立させよう」と言い出し、十分な準備もなく独立。大英帝国といえば、どこにいっても嘘をつき続け、右に左に騙し続け、最後は自分の手は汚さずさっさと逃げ出す、いつも同じパターン。
私もそこは知っていた。エリザベス女王の旦那フィリップ殿下の叔父、インド総監マウントバッテンの当時の適当さも知っていた。そこまでは有名。
それ以外のすべてが「知られていない」、知らなかった。

Shattered Lands、粉々になった土地、というタイトルの通り。
戦時中にまずミャンマーが分離。(しかも当時ミャンマーの現ヤンゴンが世界で人の出入りが激しい港、つまりニューヨークなんか追い越した大都会だったと。なんと。)
当時人口の16%いたインド系の人間はミャンマー人じゃない、と追い出される。
この本は５つの独立分離について非常に詳しく描かれているけれど、5つとも現地の人々の反応、待遇、対応、残酷さはすべて似ている。
民族や宗教の枠を超えてコスモポリタンな社会に生きていた人々。
今まで近所付き合いのあった人びとが突然、民族が違うから、宗教が違うから、という理由で追い出し合い、憎み合い、殺し合う。
その度に何百万という人間が新しく引かれた国境を超え、もちろん多くは難民となり、少なくない数の人が虐待、強姦、そして殺された。
粉々になった土地、ばらばらに引き裂かれた人々。
カシミア紛争を含むインド・パキスタン情勢、ロヒンギャ難民問題などその多くは解決していない。
他のところで聞いたことだけど(彼のお父さんのポッドキャストで)、この時代を生きた人は、それこそ戦争に駆り出された日本のおじいちゃんたちもそうかも知れないけれど、多くを語りたがらない。
彼らはその恐怖と過ちと恥を墓まで持っていくつもりで口は開かない。
その子どももなんとなく聞きづらくて追求しない。
でも今、孫の代になって初めて真相が明らかになっているという現象が起きているらしい。

細かく言うと色々とあるんだけど、それはいつかきっとこの本が日本語に訳され日本でも多くの人の手にわたることを願い省くとして(ミャンマーには日本もかなり関わってきます)、全体として印象深かったのは、分離独立前は各々の地域によって生活習慣も違っていたのに、セキュラ―な社会、非宗教的な社会だったということ。
完全に平和かといえばそうじゃなかったにしてもギリギリのバランスは保たれていた。
それが突如、超宗教的で、国民主義的、ナショナリズムに走ったはっきりいって差別的で軍事的で暴力的な社会を次々と生み出してしまった。
英国の下で植民地化された社会が良いとは言えないけれど、じゃあ紛争のないアジアを目指したとき、人々はセキュラ―であることを目指し宗教や伝統を蔑ろにしたほうがいいのか。
共同体が与えてくれる安心感は過去の産物になるのか。
伝統は狂暴なのか。

この本には毎ページに驚きが隠されている。
素晴らしい歴史本は大概まるで物語を読んでいるように感じるけれど、この本もそう。
28歳の著者サム・ダルリンプル氏はヒューマニズムに溢れ人間的で、情熱を持った人物だと言うのが手に取るようにわかる。
これだけ残酷な歴史を語る本の中にも、それでも宗教の違う友人が命をかけて助け合った話をきちんと残してくれるし、彼自身も独立分離によって故郷に帰れない人の代わりに国境を超えて代理で会いに行くという活動もしている。

もちろん父親がウィリアム・ダルリンプルということはプラスに働いているけれど、彼は20代にして初出版にして、もう自分の足で立っている歴史家の一人。
インドでもダルリンプル親子がベストセラーのチャートにずっと上ってたし、インド史周辺はなかなか面白いことになりそう。

A great book on the topic that is shamefully unknown to a lot of us, even though it’s not so long time ago and even though it totally shaped Asia today.
All the problems in Asia that we see on the news today are not simply because the local people are “naturally” violent, of course not, there is always a cause.

And the cause is, this. The British Empire had ruled and gained much from the British India and local Princely States (so very wide, from modern day Yemen to Burma, to Qatar. Qatar! And British Empire had 25% of the world population back then) until one day they couldn’t financially support it so they dropped the ball, without thinking of the very probable consequences, namely, the shattered lands and shattered people.

The book carefully follows 5 Partitions, rather than only the more widely known THE Partition between today’s India and Pakistan.
Myanmar, Arabian peninsula, India-Pakistan, Princely States, and Bangladesh.
People like me who knew so little would be surprised at how everything fell apart quickly, and be utterly shocked how millions of people crossed newly drawn borders each time. And every one experienced some horror; the violence, looting, rape, and many killing.
The consequences of the relocation, the migration, and of course of refugees like Rohingya people still remains as huge problems. 

Stereotypically, British officers’ works were full of lies and betrayals, their selfishness with their strong interesting in keeping their hands clean.
As a predicable result, people who lived in cosmopolitan societies, were suddenly put in various corners of Shattered Lands, and they turned against their neighbours because they now became their enemies.

What got me thinking most throughout my reading was how pre Partitions era things were more secular, and as the lands got divided it firmly became a matter of religions and ethnicity, it was all about nationalism, of the new nations that were born out of the shattered lands – again and again in the each phase of the Partitions.
Not that the colonisation era was good, but you cannot stop wondering, if we now want to end the fighting in Asia would we have to eliminate the notions of religion and ethnicity?
Letting go of the sense of community or tradition? The peace of mind it provides?
Is it really a dangerous thing to have a tradition?

I heard somewhere that people who experienced the Partitions, probably just like our grandfathers in Japan who were sent to the war, have preferred to keep quiet.
They chose to take the horror, errors and shame to their graves, and their children also kind of hesitated to insist.
However, now that it’s their grandchildren’s generation, things are now becoming uncovered and dusted off because they are finally opening their mouths to tell us.
And this might be one of the reasons why this book is written now at this moment in time, by this brilliant author who is in his 20s, and this is one of the reason this book will remain in the history to come.

The book has great details with wonderful storytelling skills, and most notably it has the marvelous sense of humanity, just like his father, Sam Dalrymple is such a humane human full of compassion and passion, with giggles – but he is already on his own feet, and how exciting is it that two Dalrymples are on the chart? Very.

ブータンに住む故郷ネパールから追い出された難民。
カリンポンに住むビハール出身のムスリムの商人。
ニューヨークにすむネパールに行ったことがない移民の子。

彼らの物語は辛くて悲しい、でもドラマチックには描かれない。
だって彼らの人生はリアルで、大袈裟なドラマではない。
遠くなっていく伝統としきたり、強くなっていく故郷への思いという避けようのない物語を背負っている。

日本にも多くのネパール人が住んでいるということも忘れてはいけない。

じんわりと心に残る短編集。

A collection of short stories of people who have different ties to Nepal.

It's about lives of people living in diaspora, sense of not belonging where they live.
To begin with, 
Nepalese people in Darjeeling area have a different sense of home, and not necessarily uniformed. 
And how about Nepalese in Bhutan who got kicked out to Nepal?
Or Muslim from Bihar in Kalimpong? 
A guy from Darjeeling in New York who's never been to Nepal?

The stories are subtly harsh and sad but not exaggeratingly dramatic, just like real lives of real people, they carry their own inevitable drama and the longing, between tradition and practice and sense of home.
Nice short stories.

ロンドン北東部と言いつつほぼ中心にあるイズリントン区のヴィクトリア朝における犯罪、警備、刑務所の歴史エッセイ集。

ロンドンの中心地は現在の金融街シティで、そのすぐ北にあるイズリントン区は今も昔も悪名高きエリア。まさにオリバー・ツイストの世界を今でも垣間見ることができる。
興味深かったのは、当時シティ以外には警察や警備の組織が存在しなかったという点、そしてその当時から、窃盗などの軽犯罪は貧困からくるものなので住宅問題に取り組んだという点。
もちろん、イズリントン区内だけでも５つもあったという刑務所システムも街の掃除に貢献した。

当時は大英帝国の最盛期、英国は世界の四分の一を牛耳っていたのに、蓋を開けてみると首都ロンドンの市民の大半は貧困に苦しんでいたという皮肉な現実。

ロンドンに住んでいた10年以上ほとんどをこのイズリントン区で過ごしたので、この狭いエリアの歴史は、誇れるものではないけれど奥深い。

Collection of essays related to criminals, policing and prisons.
Being so closed to the City, Islington, especially Clerkenwell had a pretty bad history.
It’s interesting that there was no “police” outside of the City, and at the same time people realised that the petty crimes are born out of poverty so the policing and the housing improved the situation.

Crazy to think that the alleys in London were so poor yet they had the Empire.

In any case, interesting to know the area I know so well has such an interesting (but not very proud) history.

アフリカの人々の人生は、ヨーロッパ人が勝手に始めた戦争、つまりアフリカに住む人々とは全く関係のない殺し合いビジネスによって左右される。
それでも彼らは確実に自分たちのものである小さな幸せや悲しみをしっかりと握りしめる。
そんな狂暴な環境でも、植民地主義上の植民者と先住民でありながらも少しマジカルなでも一人間同士の関係も描かれていて少し希望を持つこともできる。

A beautiful story told in a cruel and violent environment; war and colonisation. 

It's a reminder that people's loves get messed up by the external horrible business of war, like African lives affected by wars that are happening in Europe, "nothing to do with us" 
But importantly, their lives can continue they can have little happiness or sadness that are their own, they must cling to them.
And a little magical and personal relationships with the coloniser and colonised makes the story hopeful, despite the violence that's surrounding them.

いわゆる普通の自己啓発本ではない、哲学的な考えを身につけることでほぼ誰もが陥る中年の危機を生き抜くと。いうことで楽な解決法は教えてくれない。

大体において「もっと良い人生を送れたかもしれない」は幻想であり、実際は今あなたが手にしている人生より良くなる可能性はなかったと考えれること。
結果に左右されず、今自分が行っている行動に重点を置き、その行動自体を楽しもう、と。

40代の中年に入る前に読むのも心の準備になるのかも。
ミッドライフ・クライシスの危機に面している主人公の本をいろいろ紹介してるのもよかった。
で、最後はやっぱり仏教と瞑想で終わる。

It's not a usual self help book, it's not easy to read, a quite demanding guide which forces its readers to familiarise with the philosophical thinking.
So the midlife crisis is real, and inevitable, but you can live with it by changing HOW you think about your life. "What I could have had" is usually not better than what you've got.
But it does give practical guide, like how diverting your focus away from results and goals, from actions that have ending, but turn to actions for actions' sake and enjoy them.

And of course what is self help without Buddhism and meditation.

マリアージュフレールという日本にも支店のある創業1854年のパリのお茶屋さんが出している本、兼カタログ。
前半は簡単にだけど歴史や伝統、お茶の地理などがある。
例えば日本では鉄瓶でお茶を淹れるとか、たまに内容は怪しいけど(急須だよねー)その内容の正確さは当てにならなくても、フランス人がお茶、紅茶の価値をどう思っているかがわかる。
つまり、フランス人にとっての茶は植民地時代の華やかな歴史を物語るものであり、その東洋のエキゾチックさというのが魅力であるわけで、書いてある文章の向う側にあるものが面白い。
「道は狭く急だったので茶の箱は現地民の青年が担いで運んだ」ことが恰もそのお茶の価値であるかのような、オリエンタリズム全開で100年前に書かれたのかなと思うほど。
後半はカタログと製品説明。
紅茶はよく買うのですが、まあそういう視点が売りなので仕方ないのかと。

Just a bit of history, tradition and geography of tea, which sometimes is incorrect (like, we use chunky steel pot for tea) but interesting aspect from French to see what they value in tea, that is, its colonial history and its fanciness. (Box of tea can be carried by native youths because the road is narrow and steep, etc.)
Full on Orientalism.
I do buy the tea but their selling point is the fanciness and Orientalism so maybe that's just how it is.

Then the rest is their catalogue with brief explanations.

雰囲気で買ってしまったけど、前半は良かった。
カリンポンはインド北東部の西ベンガル州の北部、ダージリン近くの街。
ここは英国人が紅茶栽培で住み着いて以来キリスト教布教が盛んで、当時はインド全土にいた英国人が子どもをカリンポンやダージリンのキリスト教系の学校に送っていた。
なのでそこまでは知っていたけれど、この本は特にペンテコステ派とカリンポンの繋がりについて詳しく書いてある。
そう、前半は。
最後の方になると、トーンが変わって良いキリスト教徒になるには、という結論で終わる。
タイトルともカリンポンの街とも関係ない説教で終わるので、かなり飛ばしながら読んだけど、最初が面白かっただけに残念。

It actually talks about the history and the background of the Christianity in Kalimpong and the area.
Then, it gradually changes the tone and he starts to preach.
The conclusion chapter has nothing to do with Kalimpong but just how to be a good Christian.
Not what it says on the tin, I skipped through towards the end.

お茶の本というのはとりあえず買う、というのが私の方針です。これはダージリンの街の中心の本屋で買った思い出の本。
どの紅茶が美味しいとか分類とかそういうことじゃなく(日本はそういう本が多い)、お茶のその興味深く残酷な歴史の本もたくさんある。でもこれは少し違う。

「世界を変えた飲み物」まさに。欧州人は東アジアのお茶に憧れ、南アジアを人工的に産地にし、中国を滅ぼし今はアフリカでもっと安く作っている、お茶。

お茶、紅茶について、その全てが書かれている本。
著者はお茶の農園をやっていた英国人の息子で政治家ということもあり、内部事情にかなり詳しいし何よりも政治的な面やきちんと数字に表すという面が特徴的。
どの時代にお茶が何トン売れたか、値段の変動は、とか。

お茶の文化や大変な歴史、そして当時の英国の政情、ここではそういったのも含め観点、テーマごとにまとめられている。
本の中でその分類の仕方が分かりにくいところもあったけど、それだけ広い視点から書かれているということ。

ワイン学なんかでも英国人が強いのと同じでここでもその生真面目な英国人さが出ている。でもワインよりももっと英国人の心とプライドの近くにいるもの、それがお茶。

A very thorough book, about tea and all about tea.
As the author is a British politician as well as a son of a tea garden manager, it’s detailed, and definitely well researched, it goes into a lot of politics and figures, rather than sensibilities of tea as a culture.

It talks about tea by topic per chapter, which somehow made it difficult to read for me but it’s justifiable because it touches a lot of aspects.
Very British, it’s just like how the British know how to dissect wine, but tea is a lot closer to their hearts and pride.

グレタのスピーチを書き起こしたもの。文字になっていることで彼女の主張がいかに明確でブレがなく芯が通っているかがわかる。

彼女は実際に世界を変えてしまった。
若者は自分の周りの問題に意識を向けるようになり、自分たちには社会に変化を与える力があると気付かされた。そしてアスペルガー症候群や自閉症の人々が持つパワーも世界に見せつけた。

そして同時に当時16歳だった彼女を目の敵にして、個人的に名指しで攻撃し、彼女の主張でなく外見を貶しいじめる大の大人がいることも明らかになった。
それでも、どんなに権力や財力のある大人が騒ごうと密かに彼女を怖がろうと、彼女の目的や言動はコンスタントで未だに辞める様子もない。頼もしい。

When written it makes it even clearer that her claims are constant, simple and strong.
She did make a difference, more young people are conscious and they’re aware they too have power to change, and also shown the world the power of people with Asperger Syndrome and Autism.
It’s also shown the world there are these people, of the olden times, who think it’s ridiculous to listen to her, and these adults personally bully her, not her claims but her appearance etc – completely off the point.
But her aim is crystal clear and she will continue to fight, whether the old men are scared of her or not.

今人気の最近の小説をまとめてロンドンで買った中の1つ、なので相変わらず内容も知らないまま購入。でもそれがよかった。

とても詩的。パッと表紙を見ただけでは予想できない雰囲気。
表紙のエッジーな雰囲気は背景で、移民、黒人文化、南ロンドン、音楽、そういうものからは暴力的で騒がしいものを連想するけど、でもこれはそういう社会の渦の中にある、彼らの住む小さなスモールワールド。
愛情に溢れ、優しさに包まれ、自由、家族、夢や悲しみの小さな世界。

主人公は幼馴染みをひたすら想い続け、保守的な父親との関係に苦しむ、つまり誰もが共感できる誰もが住んでいる各々のスモールワールド。

背景に聞こえるリズムと静かで深い愛、読み終わったあともその柔らかい気持ちが長く続く。

Very poetic.
From a quick glance of the cover, you don't expect it - immigrants, Black, south London, music, you'd expect something loud and violent. 

Loudness and violence are there, but it's the big world they lived in.
While in his small world, it's a place of love, tenderness, freedom, family, dream and grieve.
He is in love with his childhood friend, he struggles in his relationship with his father who seems to be closed up, it's the story we all share, but the story is told in a mix of rhythm and tenderness.

It leaves you with a great soft feeling of understanding and belonging.

イスラムのテロリズムが軸になってるとは知らなかった。

英国地方都市で静かに暮らしていたムスリム男性の娘にテロリスト容疑がかかり彼の世界が一転。そこに遠く離れたアメリカから白人女性がやって来て一緒に子供を救おうと言い放つ。
警察が捕まえる前にテロリスト容疑の子供たちを見つける、無謀だけれどそれが親というもの。
そしてその警察の組織から外れたある警察官も彼女自身の問題を抱えてあとを追う。

じっくり考えるストーリーではないけれど、アドレナリン大放出でどんどんとページをめくれる。
あと一歩、また逃げられた。すれ違った。
テロリスト行為がいかに宗教とは関係が薄く、誰かの利益のためだけに多くを犠牲にする行為かを訴えている雰囲気もある。
唯一ちゃんとキャラ設定がしっかりしているのはそのお父さんSajid。
ムスリムのお父さん、今までの価値観をぶっ壊されて、娘のために走ります。

長距離フライト用に選んだけど、読んだり寝たりにピッタリだった、良い選択。

Parents chasing after their each of their kids before police catch them as they're "misled" to join terrorist actions.
Police officer who is also a mother also joins the chase from her own perspective.

Probably the most interesting character is the father, Sajid.
A Muslim dad whose life turned upside down but keeps running for his daughter. 

But I was right to pick this as a partner of the long flight. A page-turner.

ロンドン映画会社時代の友人の本、Myrthaliシリーズ第2作目。最初のも良かったけどこの続編もいい。

作者曰く、もっとダークな雰囲気とのことで確かにそう。前回から成長した主人公、1作目はもっと体力的にきつい冒険だったのが今度は精神的きつい冒険に。対面する人物や挑戦に対し、そして自分に対し不安や疑問を抱く。真夜中の世界で夢の中での自分の弱さとの戦い。

このYA(ヤングアダルト、ティーン向け)の本が好きな理由はもうひとつ、いわゆる典型的な人物像に静かに挑戦していること。主人公はインド系イギリス人の少年だったり、パッと見分からない障害をもっていたり、ジェンダー、年齢、能力など、読者が勝手にステレオタイプを想定している要素に反抗している。でも決してそれ自体はストーリーに無関係であくまでバックグラウンドとして。

珍しくe bookで読んだ一冊、500ページ越えの長編だけど面白いのでどんどん進める。シリーズ第3作も楽しみ

Second Myrthali book.
The first was great, and this second one is even better.
As it was suggested, this is certainly darker, and it makes sense as Krish has grown up since his first adventure.
The first was more physically challenging and about finding his stronger self, and the second is more about doubting, the scenes are darker (also literally, it’s the endless nighttime) and the protagonist more mature.
Must say, I simply love that his partner came back!

I love the fact that the story background subtly challenges the “typicalness” – his own race (though importantly, this is not a story of “a journey of an Indian boy” it is a “journey of a boy who wants to save his mother”) or that disability of some characters are clearly stated, and it quietly challenges the gender stereotype, as well as other stereotypes like age or ability, without making it about it.

It’s full of imagination, I’d say more than the book 1, it is rather long-ish being over 500 pages, but doesn’t feel like it, it’s full of thoughts and actions… and well, we’ll all have to wait for the book 3!

★★★★★ 何年か探し続けた一冊。インドに吸収されたシッキム王国の壮絶な歴史。ヒマラヤ東部のこのあたり、文化がごちゃごちゃに混ざってて大好き。また行きたい。英国の植民地だったインドは独立後にはすぐ隣の小さな王国を植民地化する、でも誰も語ってはいけない暗い歴史の1ページ。

★★★★★ A dynamic history of the kingdom of Sikkim that got annexed by India. I love this area of the east of Himalaya, it's a total mix of cultures. Soon after gaining an independence from Britain, India "colonised" a small kingdom, a dark page of history that nobody should talk about.

何年も探した結果やっとデジタル本で友人に送ってもらった。結局紙媒体の本はインド政府に出版停止された本なので、探してもない。
いやというか発売禁止にすると余計に盛り上がるから、印刷停止命令を出したそう。結果は同じこと。

別のシッキムについての本で完全に魅了され2023年にシッキムまで行きました。
あの辺は本当に不思議。ヒンドゥー教徒が過半数なのに(ヒンドゥー教のネパール系は80%以上)、寺院は仏教のお寺が多い。

インド政府が出版後にすぐ停止させた理由は良くわかる。
これは絶対に読んでもらいたくない。

チョギャル(チベット系シッキム国王)を個人的に知っていたジャーナリストが書いたいわゆる暴露本で、彼が聞いたこと、見たこと、交わした会話、肌で感じたこと、当時の新聞記事など、この数年間の様子がこと細かく記録されている。

シッキム王国の歴史の基本的な知識がないとこの本は難しい。
その歴史自体についてちょっと簡単にいうと。
シッキムはインドの北東部、ネパール、チベット、そしてダージリンのあるインド西ベンガル州、ブータンと各国に囲まれている、すごい立地。ヒマラヤ山脈の麓で冬は厳しいけれど豊かな地。
長い間チベット系をトップに現地民レプチャ族と静かに暮らしていたけど、英国の紅茶産業がダージリンで始まり、18世紀に働き手としてものすごい数のネパール人が流れ込んできて、上流階級が少数民族となり、大半を占めるネパール系が差別されるという不思議な形に。(これはいまでもグルカ運動が続いていて解決されていない問題)
1947年インド独立時にダージリンやカリンポンなどはインド西ベンガル州になるが、シッキムはそのままシッキム王国を維持。
チョギャルが若いアメリカ人女性と再婚し東洋のグレース・ケリーと話題になったことで知られているかも。

シッキム王国がインド、シッキム州になったのは1975年。
インドは英国の植民地主義に苦しみ、独立を勝ち取って30年もしないうちに、インド自らがシッキム王国を植民地化したわけで、この史実は非常に都合が悪い。
嘘、マインドコントロール、偽りの約束、賄賂にフェイクニュースになんでもあれ。
そして圧倒的で一方的な暴力。
Smash=ぶち壊して、grab=奪え。
道徳的にまずいことは全部あった。
インドはメディアをコントロールしてシッキム国王を悪者に仕立て上げ、増え続けるネパール系と権力を持つチベット系の社会問題を悪用し、慎んだ生活をしていた人々を騙して、インド側は見事に嘘に嘘を重ね、反対派を暴力で押さえつける。
ふと気がつけば、シッキム国民たちは自分達が進んでインドに吸収されることを望んでいるかのようになってしまい、最後はインドが軍隊を送り込み、あっという間に国はなくなった。
まさに植民地主義の鏡の様なやり方。少数の外国人が強すぎる権力を振りかざす。
インドの政治は複雑で私は勉強不足の部分も多かったけど、それでもあからさま。
シッキム国王は確かにネパール系を差別していたけれど、シッキム王国内で解決方法はあったかもしれない。
でも、それでも、インドはシッキム王国のあの立地が欲しかった。数年かけて重要人物たちを手懐け、確実にインドのものにしたかった。
どんな手を使ってでも。
このインドの暗い現代史を今のインド人はどこまで知っていて、どう思っているのか。
多分知らない。シッキム国民たちは自らの意思で正当な方法で素晴らしい国インドの一部になれた、と教えられているから。

The book I had to look for everywhere but couldn't find as a physical book as it was practically banned as soon as it was published.

And, no wonder it was banned (well not banned, as that would be too scandalous, they just did not allow to print any more) it is by a journalist who personally knew the Chogyal, the king, so it's detailed and it's what he saw, heard, conversed and felt, as well as collection of newspaper articles. 

And it doesn't look good for India.
India, who had until recently suffered the Imperialism is now putting Imperialism on Sikkim. 
Lies, manipulations, false promises, guaranteeing personal gains, not to mention violence. Anything you can think of that is morally wrong, was done to Sikkim.
Cleverly manipulating the media to make people believe the Chogyal was the bad guy. They then tricked the modest simple people - you don't like the monarchy, this bad guy, then vote to be annexed by India.
The Indian officer in Sikkim already had all the power he wished, and the last blow was easy, just lie.

As mentioned in this book, the snap referendum was based on manipulations and physically impossible to run it in the remote area so quickly. Of course, if you vote against the annexation you'd likely beaten up, too.

It's very detailed and was difficult to follow for me who had no basic understanding of Indian politics.
But what was happening was clear, you cannot believe what you are reading with your eyes, it's incredibly similar to what British did to India; concentration of power in the hands of foreigners and dirty politics.
Yes the Chogyal was hostile towards Nepali, but there was certainly a room for compromise and he probably would have been the Chogyal for all. 
It could have been a republic, also.
But no, India wanted it, the perfect location at the border, and took time to absorb it slowly but surely. 
Now I'd like to know how Indian people think if this today, or maybe first of all if they are at least taught everything.
