古典って避けてしまう傾向にあるけど、実はエンターテイメント性が高いものが多いんですよね。
まあ、だからこそ何世紀も愛されるわけですが。

この本もそう。
ドロドロのメロドラマもあればロマンスもある。
強い女性像のイメージがあったのでロマンス要素に関しては想像以上だった。
一人の女性の惨めな子供時代を経て自らの手で這い上がる成長物語であり、フェミニズム満載であり、宗教の問題も、ちょっと怖めのゴシックでもあり、階級社会、人種、植民地主義などなど当時のイギリスにとっての社会的なテーマが盛り沢山。

そして当時の批判は目に浮かぶよう。
家父長制に服従しない女？男にノーという女？地位もなく地味な見た目のくせに？なんということでしょう。

もちろん今日の社会では見方は変わる(といってもいまだに女のくせにという意見は無きにしも非ず)。
彼女は男性にただ単に宝石やきれいな服を浴びるように与えられる人生は送りたくない。
自分も対等に貢献できると確信できる日まで彼女は愛する人をも拒否し続ける。

あと「屋根裏部屋の狂気の女」もとっても興味深い。
当時の差別主義が隠さずに描かれており、混血の人間、黒人であるこの女は理性がなく暴力的で、高貴な白人の文明から遠ざけなければいけない。
そしてジェーン本人はあまり怖がっても憎んでもいないというところも気になる。
この辺りは本が出ているそうなので、いつか。

本屋さんでなんとなく手にした本、蓋を開けてみると、私が何年も住んでいたロンドンのホロウェイ地区に住む男性の気まずいコメディー小説だった。

130年前に書かれた本なのでもちろん近所の様子はぜんぜん違うけれど、ユーモアは完全なるブリティッシュユーモア。
下層のミドルクラスの男性の家族、下層といえど華やかな場に呼ばれてしまったり、一応はメイドに厳かな態度を見せたりしないといけないけど、どうもうまくいかない。

気まずい生活のなかで頑張る気が優しいのか気が弱いのか微妙な「何者でもないただの」男性の書く日記。

One of the books I randomly picked up, and it turned out to be a book of British comedy of a man who lived in Holloway, where I also lived for a while, though it was written over 130 years ago.

It's very British, the awkwardness, pretentiousness, and he really tries to show his dignity but everything goes wrong, so awkward.
You can't help but feel sorry for Mr. Pooter, the Mr. Nobody, and be charmed by his gentleness.

つい最近「カラマーゾフの兄弟」を読み終わって、なんというかカラマーゾフが幽霊のように追いかけてくるんです。この物語よりも素晴らしいものはない、と呟きながら。
なので、潔く「罪と罰」。

カラマーゾフと比べて短いし、比較的ストーリーを追いやすい。
単純に主人公一人だからという理由で。
でもストーリー、出来事を追いやすいというだけで、決して読みやすい訳ではない。
その辺に関しては私がグダグダ感想を述べても仕方ない、この本も「偉大な一冊」であることは誰もが知っているから。

青年ラスコーリニコフは問題児だ。
でも彼が本の中で問題を起こすから、自分の行動を正当化するからじゃない。
彼は私達読者に、特に若者に、社会に対して自分勝手な問題を起こしてもいいんだよ、と囁いているからだ。
この本が若者に与えた影響は簡単に想像できる。
どの時代もどの国でも、自分は特別なのに不当に扱われているという(もしくは扱われているという妄想であっても)憎しみと怒りは普遍的。

若いことは美しくはない。若いことは痛みでしかない。
その上、すこし頭が良くて、自信はないのにプライドにまみれた青春は耐えられない。
彼のその無知、無垢、妄想の前にはばかるもの、それは生きるということ、人生。

I had just finished The Karamazov Brothers recently, and I admit it's been following me around like a ghost, wanting something as grand.
So here it is, Crime and Punishment.

This one is less lengthy and the story is rather "easy" to follow, simply because it's about one person.
It's easier to follow but it's not easy to read.
But, there is not much to say about the story from my part, it's a masterpiece, everyone knows it.

The protagonist, Raskolnikov, is a problem, not merely because he causes problems, because he whispers to us, especially youths, to be free to be selfish and problematic to the society.
Such a provocative book.
"I'm special, I am allowed to be special, why do they treat me unfairly" this is the hatred and anger everyone can related to, anywhere in the world any time.

Youth is not beautiful, it's painful, but growing up with a bit of intelligence and a lot of pride (but without confidence) is intolerable. His innocence and delusion face the reality that is, life.

世界最高峰の小説、最高傑作。
たしかに長編だし、最初の方は宗教的でゆっくり始まる、でも段々といろいろな事柄が絡み合い、謎を生み出し、謎が解かれていき、と次に今度は何が起こるかをドキドキしながらページをめくってしまう自分がいる。
だからドストエフスキーは素晴らしい語り手、ストーリーテラーなんですね。

世界中の人が読み、再読し、研究されているので私がわざわざ意見を書くまでもないんですが、単刀直入にいうと、物凄いものに出会ってしまった、ということ。
読み直して、他に読んだ人とも感想を交換して、その上で浮かび上がる自分の意見を書き出して、となんだかこれからの一生についてきそうな本。
続編があるはずだったから未完だということもあるだろうけど、未完なのに完全。

ミステリーであり、恋愛小説であり、宗教についても、家族についても、貧困についても、一つ一つのテーマは誰もが分かるシンプルなものでありながら、とにかく広く深い、そんな壮大な小説。
というか正にそこで、今後色んな本を読んでここまで衝撃を受けるものはあるか不安にすらなる。

素晴らしい、傑作、ここまで来ると人類の宝でもあり、本という媒体でなければ博物館に飾られるレベル。
全体的にずっと暗いし重たいのに、実は未来に向かっているという点も素晴らしいとしか言いようがない。

読むだけでも一つの到達点でもあるんですよ、長いしややこしいし。
でも読んでみる、その行動だけにもすでに価値がある。
その上で読み直してもっと分かればより良い読書体験になると思う。ので少し時間を置いて再読必須。


ちなみに相関図はあったほうがいい。
ロシア文学はころころと呼び名を変える上に登場人物が多い。
で、日本語で読んでないけれど、出版社によってページ数がぜんぜん違うみたい。
下にリンクを張っている光文社は全5巻で約2500ページ、新潮文庫は上下あわせて1400ページ。
どれが良いとなると個人の好みもあるけれど、光文社が読みやすいそう。
1000ページの差が気になるけれど、しっかりと理解しながら読めたほうが良いと思うので、いつか光文社の日本語版も読むことにする。

One of the greatest books ever written, and I'm one of millions to agree it is.

It is long, it starts slow, it is difficult, but as the story evolves it actually gets exciting, new mysteries are introduced, some doubts are resolved, and you simply cannot help but be curious.
Dostoevsky, a great story teller.
It's been read, re-read and studied many times by people around the world ever since it was written, so not much for me to add but I'd just say, I encountered a grand book.
I now want to re-read, speak with other readers and find out what I'll be finding out as I read again - it's a book that will follow you around for the rest of your life.

So it's so magnificent that it's a piece of human heritage, if it was not a book that could be reprinted, it'd be in a museum.
It has the suspense and the mystery to keep you turning the page, while it always goes back to the simple idea of good and bad, poor and rich, fortunate and misfortune, love, family, friendship, pride, desire and pity and all in between.

Despite the whole dark damming story, it had an incredibly bright and hopeful note. 
I'm also simply glad I completed it, it's an accomplishment itself, totally worth it, but now I am not sure if I get to read anything as good as this great story.

タゴールの素晴らしさはどこでも語られる。
でも実際に色々と読むまでは本当には実感できない。

もう一世紀以上経っているのでタゴールの作品集という名の本はたくさん出ているけれど、これはインド人の友人にもらったインドの出版社のもの。
詩や短編小説が多いので、インドでもその時代によってもかなりの本が出ていて、人と話していてその本は読んでないけどその物語は知っている、ということはよくある。

この本の中だけをみても、ジャンルがいろいろとある。
恋愛もの、幽霊の出る話や、家族、友情と、彼のその取り上げるストーリーの幅の広さに驚かされるけれど、そこで語られる物語の多くが、正直で真面目、謙虚で貧しい人々であるということも忘れてはいけない。

100年経っても、時代は変わっても、人々の苦しみの根源は変わらない。
だからベンガル地方、インド、アジアという枠を超えて、人はタゴールの物語に心を打たれる。

中でも良かった作品は「The river stairs」「The Cabuliwalla」「The son of Rashimani」「The master Mashai」「Living or Dead」「Fair neighbour」

でも可能であれば他の手に取りやすい作品から入るのも良いと思います。

アジア初のノーベル賞受賞者、芸術と平和という観点から近代インドと近代日本を繋いだ人でもある、けれど日本では彼の作品はそうどこにでもあるというわけではないようです。

I have read about how great Tagore's works are, but until you read them, experience them, you don't really know, of course.

There are many of "selected works of" kind of books, this one is from Fingerprint in India.

These stories vary in the theme or genre, might be a love story, or a ghost story, or about family or friendship.
It shows how expansive his talent is, but more significantly his stories are about honest, humble, and poor people. 
That is why after more than 100 years they do not get old and continue to touch people all over Bengal, India, Asia and beyond. 

Some stories stand out more than others to me, like "The river stairs", "The Cabuliwalla", "The son of Rashimani", "The master Mashai" "Living or Dead", "Fair neighbour"

ちょっと頑張りすぎたかもしれない。
哲学の基礎もなく、ただ単にちょっと前に読んだこの本の抜粋バージョンが面白かったからと、これに手を付けてしまった。
間違いなく難しい。
でもどちらかというと楽しく読めた。ほんと。
いくつか面白かったのをピックアップしたので読んでみて、ぜひ挑戦してみて。

ニーチェがまだ30代だった頃に書かれたアフォリズム、格言集なので、後期のような「確立された」雰囲気ではない、んだそう。後期を知らないからなんとも言えないけど。
いいニュースとしては、格言集なので一つ一つは短くて中には一行のものだってある。
悪いニュースは、638個のアフォリズムがあり、中にはかなり深入りしていくものもあって、何度か読み返してなんとなく分かってきたら、さっさと次に進んでいってしまう。
当時は彼は色々と絶望していたようでショーペンハウアーを目の敵にしているのかな、というくらい批判しているけど、ニーチェの前の時代の哲学の流れが分かってないと何を批判しているのかが掴みにくい。

でもこういう難しい本は本編に入る前の専門家の解説をきちんと真面目に読んでいるので、今回もおかげで必死で付いていくことはできた、と思う。
自由な人間であるということは、自分の意志をきちんと持ち、宗教やそれまでの固定観念から飛び立った存在で、そのへんのことをついてる。

特に面白い箇所は書き出したりしてゆっくりと読み進めたので時間はかかったけど良い読書体験です。

この時代だから仕方ないといえど、彼は女性を非常に見下していたのでそのあたりがイマイチ説得力がない部分ではある。
意外と楽しめるのは、たまにジョークのような文章が出てきたり、滑稽なおかしさがあったりするので、ああ彼も苦しんでるんだな、となんかしみじみしてくる。

結局は、この本のタイトルの通り、私達はあまりにも人間的なんですね。

I was too ambitious, even though I did like the shorter version of this book, it's Nietzsche, of course I struggled.
But it doesn't mean I regretted it, no it was interesting and actually entertaining.

It's a collection of aphorisms when he was younger, so it's probably not as "established", the good thing is each aphorism is short, sometimes just a line.
The bad thing is, there are 638 of them and many are deep, you try to understand it, reread it, then he's already on another topic.
When he refers to specific people, like Schopenhauer, whom he seems to be influenced greatly in this period, it's not easy because I don't know them.
But I get the general idea of his thoughts and what he is trying to say here.
A free man, a man who thinks for himself, free from religions and conservative customs.
He's misogynistic but we all know that anyway so nothing new.
There are some phrases that are strangely, awkwardly funny.

After all, the title suggests it, we're all too human

確かに、ドストエフスキー的なものがところどころに見える。
人生はフェアではない、悲劇なのに滑稽で悲しい笑劇。
官僚主義に人生を左右される人生。

代表作「外套」、下級役人の主人公が節約してやっと買ったコート、それが盗まれる。
たったそれだけと言えばそれだけかもしれない、けれど必要以上にストーリーや感情の揺れを抑えて抑えて描くことで、彼の感じているであろうその揺れを読者は全身で感じることができる。
どの国でどの時代どの社会で生きていようが、それは行場のない普遍的な怒りと絶望。

滑稽で信じられない、なのに普遍的とは。
ロシア文学は底なし沼。

Short stories of the famous Gogol.
You do see a lot of Dostoyevsky in his stories, that the life is unfair, and stories are tragedies yet sadly comical.

Written in this period in Russia, the stories are critical of the bureaucracy and of higher ranked officials.
A regular official saves up to get an overcoat and gets robbed, it’s simple as that, and though it’s keeping it subtle it is fully miserable, and universal, we totally understand how the protagonist is feeling at every stage of the story.

The story is ridiculous yet believable, and again universal.
Russian literature is bottomless.

ドラキュラを知らない人はいない。
映画も小説も知らなくても、ドラキュラ伯爵は子どもでも知ってる。

その原作は実は登場人物の手紙や日記を使ってストーリーを進めてるというのは知らなかった。だからリアリティがあって当時からずっと人気なんだろう。

意外だったのは、正義の味方の男たちが悪いやつを追いかけるというハリウッド映画並みのストレートな感じだったこと。
もっと意外だったのは、なんだかんだ言って若き主婦ミナが被害者になりながらも結局はその頭の良さで男たちを勝利に導くという流れ。

きちんと読んでいくと、ストーリーはかなり性的で、セクシャルでありバイセクシャルである。
ミナを襲いつつも自分の胸から流れる血を飲ませたり、ミナの夫で最初の被害者のジョナサンをも再度襲おうとする。

街に恐怖が訪れ、その結果女が知識や性に目覚め男と同じ位置に立つ。
ドラキュラによって、じゃないけどストーリー展開として。
例えばドラキュラの城にいるジョナサンを誘惑する女吸血鬼達は「女らしく」なく、彼女らに望んで誘惑されるジョナサンは「男らしく」ない。
賢いミナも「女らしく」ない。
だからこそ、男たちはグルになって恐怖の根源であるドラキュラを倒しにいく。そういう見方もある。

さらには当時のロンドンの社会を軽く風刺していたり、人種差別や精神病患者など、色々と詰め込んでいる。
でも間違いなく、この古典中の古典である「ドラキュラ」は女性の立ち位置という裏のテーマを浮き出している、そこが一番興味深い。

The classic of the classics, who doesn't know Dracula?

The entire novel is written as if it were collection of diaries, notes and letters.
In a way surprisingly to me that it was full of pure adventures, good guys chasing the bad guy to save woman.
But it is the woman who became the victim because of the men's heroism and she saves their asses.
Also if you read between the lines, it's sexual, or bisexual even. Dracula likes the blood of young beautiful women, but he also imprisoned Jonathan and attempted to attack him also.

So, the threat is in the town and it brings about the awakening of women to their intelligence and sexuality, so the 4 men go out to hunt. That's one way to look at it but certainly it's playing a lot with the idea if female sexuality and empowerment.

今年はたくさん積読していたペンギンクラシックの短いのを読み漁り。

青年の苦の詩集。
どっかで見たけど、これはできれば酔っぱらった状態で夜に読むべき詩集だそうで、地中海の青い空のしたで読んでも場違いな感じ。

自己破滅型の男である恋人との旅行から帰ってきて書いたもので、挫折と自己憐憫と欲求不満たっぷり。
まだ20歳そこそこ、なのにその昔の華やかな幸せを思い、美しくて苦悩に満ちている。
青年だからこその純粋さと苦しみ、それを書き表すランボーの天才的な才能。
せめて静かな夜に読むべきだった。

Not in the Mediterranean summer daytime.

He wrote it after the hellish travel with his lover, a self destructive man, and this is as the title suggests, a full of self pity and frustrations.

Would have felt differently if read in different occasions for sure.

Penguin classic 60, this version translated in 1962.

ペンギン・クラシックスの80周年の記念のLittle Black Classicsの一つで「人間的な、あまりに人間的な」の抜粋。
本編も読んでみたいけど、まずはこれで短く読めたのは良かった。
短いエッセイ、たまには一行だけで人間関係についてぎっしりと詰まっている。復讐心、哀れみ、結婚、愛、憎しみ。そして意外にもユーモアたっぷりで面白い。

ここに書かれていることは私達が心の何処かで抱きつつも言葉に表せない気持ち。
「愛は学ぶものであり、憎しみもまた学ぶものである」とか「結婚はうまくいくもの、一緒に住まなければ」「同じ喜びを分かち合えるのが友情だ」とか、重要箇所を選ぼうと思えばこの本すべて蛍光マーカーでいっぱいになる。

なので、やっぱりがんばって本編を読みます。

A very short book from Penguin (extract from Human, All Too Human)
It contains short phrases, sometimes just a line, on a lot of points about human relations.
From revenge, pity, marriage, love to hatred, and to my big surprise it has a lot of humour. 

Everything here is something we'd all recognise but maybe not able to put into words.
"Love must be learned, so must be hatred" or "marriage will work if they don't live together" "Shared joy makes a friend" - if I were to underline all the interesting points, the whole book will be underlined. Now I want to read the actual book, one day soon.

典型的なイングランド、英国。ライフスタイルもユーモアも。登場人物は皆生き生きとしていて、ストーリーはシンプルなのに次が気になって仕方がない。どの国のどの境遇の人をも魅了する物語だけど、もう王道を突っ走りすぎて、これに感化されていないラブストーリーを見つけることの方が難しいかも。

The story is well known, but it is true the humour in the dialogues makes this the “best loved book”
So very English, both in the lifestyle and humour.
The characters are lively, the story simple but curious and anyone can easily engage with it.
It’s so iconic that it’s now difficult to find any love story that has no reference to this book.
I should also watch the movies properly one day.
