Just a bit of history, tradition and geography of tea, which sometimes is incorrect (like, we use chunky steel pot for tea) but interesting aspect from French to see what they value in tea, that is, its colonial history and its fanciness. (Box of tea can be carried by native youths because the road is narrow and steep, etc.)
Full on Orientalism.
I do buy the tea but their selling point is the fanciness and Orientalism so maybe that's just how it is.

Then the rest is their catalogue with brief explanations.

    […] 🔽🔽 読書記録 🔽🔽マリアージュフレールという日本にも支店のある創業1854年のパリのお茶屋さんが出している本、兼カタログ。前半は簡単にだけど歴史や伝統、お茶の地理などがある。例えば日本では鉄瓶でお茶を淹れるとか、たまに内容は怪しいけど(急須だよねー)その内容の正確さは当てにならなくても、フランス人がお茶、紅茶の価値をどう思っているかがわかる。つまり、フランス人にとっての茶は植民地時代の華やかな歴史を物語るものであり、その東洋のエキゾチックさというのが魅力であるわけで、書いてある文章の向う側にあるものが面白い。「道は狭く急だったので茶の箱は現地民の青年が担いで運んだ」ことが恰もそのお茶の価値であるかのような、オリエンタリズム全開で100年前に書かれたのかなと思うほど。後半はカタログと製品説明。紅茶はよく買うのですが、まあそういう視点が売りなので仕方ないのかと。🔽 関連ページ 🔽English review"The French art of tea" Mariage Frères (2006) Review | History and catalogue […]
