なんて本なんだろう。
これは他にない読書体験、試験的読書体験。
読者、作者、翻訳者、出版社、翻訳者、政府も本の中の人物も全部ひっくるめて、時空も日常も現実もすべてを超越して地獄と天国がこの一冊に詰まっている。

主人公である「あなた」が本を読み始めるけれど、途中から印刷が乱れる乱丁本だったようで、仕方なく本屋に戻る。
新しい本もどうも違う本らしい、しかもこっちも乱丁本、そしてそれが何度も続き。
毎回、やっと背景や人物像を把握し面白くなってきたところで読めなくなる、なんとしてでも続きが読みたい、そこから「あなた」の異様な冒険が始まる。

余談だけど「夜は短し歩けよ乙女」って絶対これに影響受けてるよね。
読書という側面じゃなくて、どこにいっても結局ある女性にたどり着くという側面で。

これは一体何なのか。
どうやってこれらの物語は終わるのか、終わりとはなにか。
読書という地味な日常の体験。一人なはずの体験。
この本はそこにいろんな疑問をガンガンぶつけてくる。
そして答えは？
本を通じて時空を超えて繋がってくる人々、登場人物、作者、その他諸々と実際に読んでいる「あなた」、最後にはなんとなくニヤニヤしてきます。
なるほど、これこそが文学の魔術師、イタロ・カルヴィーノ。

What a book.
It is beyond whatever you expected, it's an experience, an experiment, it's both the paradise and the hell for a reader.

So the protagonist "you" start reading a book, but it abruptly ends because of an error, so you return to the shop for a new copy, but it's actually another book, which also abruptly ends, and this goes on.
Each time "you" want to continue the last book because it's so good but things go bonkers, and each time you want to share this experience with a girl, "Another Reader" you met at the start.
Is it just a vicious circle? A perfect read? 
When will it end, and what is an end, anyway?

It might put you off at the start because you get completely lost, and because the book stops exactly when you start to understand the setting of the book.
But hang in there.

What is a book.
What is a story, what is the role of an author, of a translator, and a reader, other readers, in this humble experience of reading a book? 
How are we connected, beyond everyday life and common sense, beyond time and space in this humble experience of reading a book?
It throws a lot of questions at you, but what this book gives you as its answer is the joy.
And in the end, you cannot help but smile.

小説「アカバドーラ」現代サルデーニャ文学の最高峰。
アカバドーラとは、末期患者やその親族の苦しみに終止符を打つ女性のこと、そう、その町で暗黙の了解の中、患者に安楽死をもたらす役目を背負った女性。

とてもサルデーニャ的でとても地中海文化的。
土埃の立つ乾いた家の壁、バールに座っている男たち、一日中家事に追われる女たち。
草原に緑はなく茶色に乾いた草がいつこの地を炎に包もうかと小さな火花を待つ。

生を与える助産婦が女性なら、生を終わらせるのも女性。
少女マリアを引き取ってくれた独り身の女性は時折真夜中に黒尽くめの服を着て静かに家を出る。そして翌朝何もなかったかのように帰って来る。

善か悪か、天使か悪魔か死神か、それはもう問題ではない。
いま行われるべきか否か。

サルデーニャでは実際に存在していたと考えられている。
窒息という方法か、もっと有名なのは槌を使用する方法。
現在も安楽死の問題は解決しないし、間違いなく客観的に100%正しいという答えは出てこないかもしれない。

伝統に縛られた厳格な小さな町で、その大きく揺れる心境を圧倒的な力強さと威厳を持って描く一冊。
日本語もいつか出るといいですね。

The famous Accabadora, the woman who ends it.

It’s very Sardinian, very Mediterranean.
You can almost see with your eyes closed of the dry town with stones, men at the bar and women hurrying to go back home to cook, and the dry field that is brown, ready to ignite a fire from any tiny sparkles.

Maria was adopted by this woman who lives alone since she was small.
Time to time, she dresses completely in black and leave their house in the night – and comes back in the morning and continues the day.
It’s not about right or wrong, or justice or injustice, if she was an angel or devil or death – it’s about if it should be done or not.

In Sardinia it’s understood to be true, that such women did exist.
Even today the problem of euthanasia is not easily talked about and we probably won’t ever find an answer that’s absolute.
This is a book that shows the town’s unsettling state of mind with such a powerful dignity.

エーコの7冊目にして最後の小説は、陰謀論やフェイクニュースにまみれたジャーナリズム、私たちの時代におけるジャーナリズム。
彼の他の小説のように難しくてクラシックに挑発的ではない、けれど短くて比較的読みやすい。
何も「本当」なものはなく、「事実」は作り上げられる、私達の生きるこの今の社会においての信念や真実の意味を問いただす。
イタリアの知の巨人と呼ばれるエーコ、彼の頭脳のクオリティはもちろんだけど、包容力のある彼の人間的な部分が好きなんですが、これは政治的にも二極端なイタリア社会への警告にもとれる。

ただ、ムッソリーニの時代のことを振り返るので、そのあたりの知識がないとちょっと置いてけぼりを食らう。

Eco’s 7th and last novel.
It’s not ask mind provoking as his other classics but nice and short-ish.

We live in the world where nothing can be trusted to be real, and real can be fabricated.
A warning to the Italian society today.

It’d have been more fun if I knew more about the modern Italian history around Mussolini time.

ただの古典でなく何世紀も幅広く影響力があった古典、君主論。
1500年のヨーロッパにおいての、正しい君主になるにはというガイドブックで、マキャベリズムというと残酷なイメージがあるけど、紛争の耐えない時代において仕方ない部分はあるが、これが未だに民主主義国家の政治家に愛読されているというのは怖い。

自分の家族や領土を守るという目的達成のためには残酷だっていい、それが良い君主。
メッセージは明瞭で当時のヨーロッパだけでなくローマ帝国時代にも細かくくれながら、具体的なアドバイスをする。
当時から500年も言われているけど確かに、典型的なルネッサンスの産物。

私のようにローマ時代から16世紀の歴史に詳しくない場合は注意書きが多い本を選ぶのがおすすめです。いろんな歴史上の人物が出てくるのでややこしい。

Alma classics, a version that was translated and published in 2009

So this is a guidebook on how to be a good ruler in 1500s Italy.
It has many connotations but clearly it is wrong to try to apply this to all leaders or all societies.

It does recommend to focus on the ruling and go cruel, but it was probably what was needed back then.
And the words are straightforward, and references a lot to the history especially the Roman empire.
And gives practical advices on how to behave.
As they say, a quintessentially Renaissance man.

イタリア民話集という本当はもっと大きな短編集からの抜粋10話。
民話集ということでそれぞれは短く、道徳的な教えもある。
ただ、眠っている姫と寝て自分を王様にしたりとレイプを正当化する話もあって生々しい。
不幸なことや残酷なことも綴られている。
ちゃんと本編もいつか読まなきゃ、評価も何ともいえない。

They are short and some have moral teaching, like the last one Jump into my sack.
But the rest are tales and some just justify rapes, like sleeping with an unconscious queen and he becomes a king…

A lot of misfortunes and a fair amount of cruelty, just like any folktales.

続けて旅行記。
彼の旅の最終章、ヨーロッパ。
インド編しか読んでないけど、ここは旅も最後にかかり、しかも物理的に豊かなヨーロッパなので、余裕もある感じ。

といってもバスでイタリアやスペインを駆け巡るのは普通の神経ではできない。
こういいのを読むといよいよ現代の世の中ではこんなことはできないと思う。まず物価。そして国境を越える難しさ。
旅人という気楽さ、そして時間をも手余すという贅沢。

直前に読んだ村上春樹よりも圧倒的に旅に出たくなってしまう一冊。

あとがきの井上陽水との対談も、あんまり関係なく緩くて個別に面白い。

まずはアントニオ•グラムシについて、彼の人生のアウトラインだけでも驚愕。

イタリア、サルデーニャ州の田舎に生まれ、生後すぐに身体に障害を負う。父を亡くし貧しいながらも苦学し奨学金でトリノ大学に入学。当時から政治の世界に入り、産業都市トリノで労働運動に参加。
その後はイタリア共産党の結成に関わりロシア滞在中に当時のムッソリーニ政権から逮捕状を出され帰国不能に、その後議員に選出され無事に帰国するが再度逮捕状を出され、そのまま半生を牢獄で過ごす。獄中、多くの手紙や手記を残す。最後は障害を持ち病弱であるにも関わらず治療を拒否され虐待受け、獄中で死ぬと困るからと投げ出されるかたちで釈放された直後に死亡。
その逮捕の理由も有名で「この男の頭脳を20年間ストップさせなければならない」というファシズム政権の目論見から。

残念なことに私がグラムシについてもマルクス主義にもそんなに詳しくないので、ついていけない所も多かったけど、この本は彼の生涯においての思想の成熟の過程を追う感じで進んでいく。

46歳で亡くなる彼の徹底したマルクス主義、反ファシズムは世界中に強い影響を与える。この本の著者もブラジルのマルクス主義者。日本でも彼の思想は戦後からずっと根強い人気。

次はヘゲモニー論についてちゃんと読みたい。

It follows his life from when he was a child, lost father early, poor, physical disability, scholarship to Turin, involvement in politics, forms Communist party, arrest, life in prison, non stop writing even in the prison, even with malnutrition and torture. His insistence on the power of workers.

Difficult read as I had little background to Gramsci, and naturally, it keeps referring to his Prison Notebooks, and of course no true knowledge in Marxism.
He’s a back-to-basic Marxist.

「太陽がいっぱい」
この和訳のタイトルもいい、オリジナルもいい。

有名な映画の原作。映画は古いアラン・ドロンのもアメリカのマットディロンのも見てストーリーは知っているのにそれでもハラハラドキドキで面白い。「キャロル」を書いた同じ女性作家ということは知らず、これはシリーズというのも知らなかった。

リプリーの頭の中のことでいっぱい、いかに彼が冷淡で神経質で、そしていかにイタリアの青い空と対照的か、それがわかる読了後には日本語タイトルがピッタリだとわかる。
追い詰められ、さらりと逃げ、また繰り返す。まさに心理スリラーの傑作、最近もネットフリックスでリメイクがあったはずだけど、これは何度も語り継がれる物語。

The famous Mr. Ripley.
As expected it's a great story, which of course I already knew, but I didn't know it was written by a woman, the same writer as Carol, and it was a series. 
It focuses a lot on what's on his mind, how he's cold and nervous, contrary to the blue sky of Italy. 
Japanese title is "Full of the sun", this alone doesn't make sense, but you get the idea behind it once you finish reading the book. 
The sun was so bright, too bright.

There is a remake on Netflix (yet again!) that I should watch too, it's a story that can be told again and again.
